Despite the drink’s high caffeine concentration, Mr. Schumer claims it is aimed towards youngsters.

 

About twice as much caffeine as competitor energy drink Red Bull is found in each can of Prime Energy.

 

There is a disclaimer on every drink that suggests it is not suitable for consumption by anyone younger than 18.

But Democratic Senator Charles Schumer claimed that Prime Energy was sold and packaged “in nearly identical form” as a brand-name beverage without caffeine.

 

Consequently, he told reporters in New York on Sunday, some parents had unintentionally purchased the caffeinated beverage for their kids.

 

“The FDA [Food and Drug Administration] must investigate PRIME for its absurd caffeine content and its marketing targeting kids on social media,” he tweeted shortly thereafter.

 

“Prime Energy has a similar caffeine content to other popular energy drinks, all of which are within the legal limits of the countries in which it is sold.” Before going on sale, it complied with all FDA regulations, a Prime representative told the BBC.

With a combined 48 million YouTube subscribers, Logan Paul and KSI introduced the caffeine-free Prime Hydration beverage in 2022.

 

It soon gained popularity online, leading to lengthy lines and even headfirst dives into store shelves.

 

In January of this year, the caffeinated Prime Energy drink was introduced. The manufacturer advertises that it is vegan and sugar-free.

 

Each can of the beverage bears a warning stating that it is not advised for use by anyone under the age of eighteen, by anyone with caffeine sensitivity, or by nursing or pregnant women.

Several educational institutions worldwide have issued alerts on Prime beverages or outright prohibited them.

 

After a student became ill after school hours earlier this year, Milton Primary School in Newport, Wales, wrote a note to parents cautioning them not to mix up the caffeinated and non-caffeinated forms of the drink.

 

In the meantime, energy drinks were outlawed at Queensland, Australia’s Maryborough State High School.

 

“There are some new energy or hydration drinks that have recently hit the market… some of which have 4 TIMES the caffeine or stimulant as ‘regular’ energy drinks,” the institution stated in a Facebook post.

 

“These can cause significant concerns in students with (potentially unidentified) health issues,” it stated.
