Even though he passed away at the young age of 27, Paul Hunter left behind a lasting legacy as one of the greatest snooker players of all time.

Competitors vie for the Paul Hunter Trophy in the Masters competition each year in honour of the sportsman.

Who was the legendary Paul Hunter in pool?

Sadly, British snooker player Paul Hunter passed away in 2006.

Because of his long blonde hair, he was dubbed “Beckham of the Baize” and drawn similarities to David Beckham.

On October 15, 1978, Hunter was born in Yorkshire.

From an early age, he had a strong interest in snooker and, at the age of 16, made his professional debut in July 1995.

Paul was the three-time winner of the Masters, having won in 2001, 2002, and 2004.

In addition, he won the British Open in 2002 as well as the Welsh Open in 1998 and 2002.

The athlete received a posthumous award for BBC Sports Personality of the Year following his passing, and the Masters trophy was renamed in his honour in 2017.

Paul’s 2004 Masters championship match triumph over Ronnie O’Sullivan is among his most well-known snooker bouts.

In 2024, O’Sullivan honoured his late competitor on the occasion of the game’s 20th anniversary.

“Paul was an incredible talent,” he declared. He was undoubtedly a star who went above and beyond the game.

“Isn’t he the Beckham of snooker?” He was a good-looking boy who was always grinning and acting like a gentleman.

“All the players loved Paul, and I have some great memories and good times with him. He will always be remembered.”

The snooker players and everyone who knew him will always hold a special place in their hearts for him.

In August of 2004, Paul wed Lindsey Hunter, née Fell.

The wedding took place in Jamaica for the pair.

After working as a beauty therapist, Lindsey became writer.

Following his passing, Lindsey penned Unbreakable: My Life with Paul – a Story of Extraordinary Courage and Love, a book about her late husband’s life.

Lindsey describes Paul’s illness and tragic death in the book.

She adds, “I can’t even begin to say how much I miss him, but the love we built together was so strong that it will live on forever,” in a particularly moving passage.

He has my gratitude for giving me Evie. because of the life he gave us. For the friends he bestowed upon me. For the memories and the things that continue to occur as a result of him.

“I’ll hold his love in my heart for as long as I live and I wish I could say to him that even if I knew we had to go through it all again: ‘I’d still pick you, babes. I’d still pick you.’

Paul Hunter, did you have any kids?

Before his untimely demise, Paul and his wife Lindsey Hunter had one kid.

In December 2005, the couple welcomed a daughter, whom they named Evie Rose.

Evie was just 10 months old when Paul tragically passed away in October of 2006.

It was revealed in 2013 that Lindsey had given birth to a second daughter, Freya.

Lindsey was “over the moon” to give Evie a little sister, according to a Mirror article at the time.

What caused Paul Hunter to pass away?

Paul passed away from cancer in October 2006 at the age of 27.

In April 2005, it was determined that he had neuroendocrine tumours.

A neuroendocrine tumour is defined as “a rare tumour that can develop in many different organs of the body” by the NHS.According to them, the rumours “affect the cells that release hormones into the bloodstream.”
