The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for free agency and the NFL Scouting Combine simultaneously, with free agency just a few weeks away. How the front management intends to handle the quarterback position is currently the biggest concern around the Steelers roster.
The best course of action for the team to succeed for the next few seasons is to trade for Justin Fields and base Arthur Smith’s offence on his abilities, with Kenny Pickett filling in as a backup, if the deal is reasonable and doesn’t include a first-round choice from the Steelers.
We’ve picked our top five choices for the forthcoming season based on rumours and discussions.
The Steelers may really maximise the potential of these skill players if they acquire Ryan Tannehill and allow him to start and tutor Pickett because of his familiarity with this offence, assuming they decide not to trade for Fields.
I thought about signing Russell Wilson to start as No. 2, with Pickett as his backup, but I decided to give Tannehill the advantage because of his background with Arthur Smith. However, Wilson would benefit far more from this offence than any other quarterback did during the previous campaign.
It would be best for the Steelers to sign Mason Rudolph and let him and Pickett battle it out during training camp and the preseason if they are unable to sign any of the three veterans listed above. This doesn’t necessarily rule out a rookie pick later in the draft or perhaps a less expensive free agent, but it would likely exclude Rudolph from consideration.
First-round rookie refers to any of the top three quarterbacks selected in the 2024 NFL draft. It will be quite expensive for the Steelers if they try to get Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, or Caleb Williams. We rank it last on our list because it would be more expensive than exchanging for Fields.
