In front of their home audience, the Celtics’ season came to an end on Monday night after a heartbreaking Game 7 loss to the Heat. Bill Simmons was one of the supporters at TD Garden; as the game was coming to a conclusion, the TNT cameras caught Simmons with a dejected expression on his face.
Should a picture truly be worth a thousand words, the Boston Celtics’ showcase image can be summed up in just two terms.
“We are aware. We’re not very happy either.
On Monday, the Celtics shared a photo of Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, and Keith Bogans getting their jerseys on Instagram. Barstool Sports saw the photo, and based on appearances, you could spread positivity throughout the room with a saltine cracker—the smallest, crumbliest cracker imaginable.
It must be challenging for these three to travel to Boston aware of the roles they are (or are not) expected to play. As the club tries to adjust to life after the Big Three, many Boston fans will hold hatred against the franchise’s new faces. Replacing Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen isn’t exactly a piece of key lime pie.
Ironically enough, the only one attempting to smile is Humphries, the player whose name is reportedly being shopped in trade talks alongside Gerald Wallace, per CBSSports’ Matt Moore. The Celtics are currently over the limit of players they can keep on their active roster, and Bogans and Brooks look as though they also feel their days in Boston are numbered.
Either way, you’re receiving a jersey, not surviving the Dust Bowl.
There has to be some well of enthusiasm from which these men can plumb a smile to flash during a highly publicized ceremony such as this.
Maybe there isn’t, though. Maybe Brad Stevens’s pouting boy grin is the only remaining trace of happiness in this room. Perhaps the three Sads ran out of coffee. It might be Maybelline.
Boston supporters, cue up “The Lonely Man.
