While they continue to hope that Mason Rudolph will re-sign, the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking for a quarterback, or at least competition for Kenny Pickett. Another name has come up as a possible candidate.
The Steelers’ quarterback carousel has a new rider according to NFL analyst Rich Eisen. The team may sign former Las Vegas Raider Jimmy Garoppolo to be Pickett’s backup if they are unable to acquire Rudolph.
When asked about Garoppolo’s final destination, Eisen responded, “Maybe he’s a guy who winds up in Pittsburgh.” “Supporting Kenny Pickett? To be honest.
Due to his violation of the NFL’s policy regarding performance-enhancing drugs, Garoppolo may miss two games of football. Before mid-March, the Raiders anticipate releasing him, capping his one-year tenure in Rudolph is currently the Steelers’ top option, and if given a fair chance, they think he may be the starting quarterback in 2024. But according to sources, he might be seeking for a new job this offseason, which would leave Pittsburgh needing to find another experienced quarterback.
Eisen thinks Garoppolo might enter the game with backup aspirations, but Pittsburgh might have another quarterback capable of starting by the end of it.
“Remember when Jimmy Garoppolo, the quarterback in question, was told you’re so far gone, we’re not even giving you a playbook at the start of training camp,” Eisen continued. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac revealed some worrisome news about the state of the Steelers locker room. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a clear-cut No. 1 quarterback.
“There appears to be some internal division that maybe Mason Rudolph should be the starter,” Dulac said.
And to make matters worse, Dulac also revealed that the Steelers “are not interested in bringing in a quarterback who wants to be a starter.”
