One of the athletes that has generated the most talk this offseason is Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Under head coach Josh Heupel, quarterback Hendon Hooker of the University of Tennessee set the standard for what a signal caller can do. Many appear to think that Iamaleava can surpass that standard.
ESPN conducted an exercise to determine which players have the greatest room for improvement in the upcoming college football season. The good news for Iamaleava is that he seems to have all it takes to be a difference-maker at quarterback. In Tennessee’s 35-0 Citrus Bowl victory over Iowa last season, he scored four touchdowns in his maiden start. Iamaleava, however, has been in the public eye ever since he joined with the Vols. This includes the news of his purported $8 million non-guaranteed contract, his praise as the quarterback who would propel the team back into the title game, and his involvement in the recent NCAA probe into Tennessee’s programme. Iamaleava is a Samoan woman who was born in Long Beach, California.[3][5] Iamaleava went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, as well as Warren High School in Downey, California. Iamaleava ran for six touchdowns in addition to throwing for 1,726 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior.[6] He received the title of Player of the Year for Polynesian Football.Iamaleava, who threw for 186 yards and a touchdown, was also awarded the Polynesian Bowl MVP.[9] One of the best athletes in the class of 2023, Iamaleava committed to play football for the University of Tennessee in college.[10][11]
Iamaleava trained for the 2022 Orange Bowl and enrolled early at Tennessee in December 2022.[12][13]
