‘Joe from Vegas’ started Friday morning’s conference call talking about Cameron Heyward’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year victory, and Heyward didn’t immediately connect the dots.
It makes sense, too, since Heyward was still ecstatic about winning the NFL’s top honour nearly twelve hours earlier.
He thus responded to the query of what it’s like to become one of the former Steelers’ hall of fame teammates Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, and Jerome Bettis who have all won the accolade.
“It’s incredible,” Heyward exclaimed. “You consider individuals such as Joe Greene, Franco, Lynn Swann, and Jerome Bettis. It is an honour for me to be in that group. It almost doesn’t seem like I deserve it. Those guys accomplished a great deal.
Heyward was certain he wouldn’t hear good news at the NFL Honours ceremony. In order to prevent disappointment, he prepped the people for it.
After that, his victory went viral on social media, and friends began texting him.
It still didn’t seem real to him.
To be honest, it seems a bit weird. Heyward’s main project of the past two years is ‘Cam’s Kindness Week,’ where he goes out on daily missions to make a difference in many ways, most of which this year revolved around being a support system for today’s youth. He met with grieving children at The Caring Place, for example, or worked on his pet project, ‘Craig’s Closet,’ named in honour of his father.
