With Woods playing a limited schedule due to ailments in recent seasons, the tournament host was making his first appearance of 2024 and just his seventh at an official PGA Tour event since The Masters in November 2020.
In an exciting opening round 72 at Riviera Country Club, Woods blended five birdies with six bogeys to stay within eight shots of early leader Patrick Cantlay, who fought with back spasms on his closing holes and sank on the fairway on his final hole.
The 48-year-old looked to push through to the weekend after birdieing the first round of his second round. However, he fell short of the cut line after back-to-back bogeys at the fourth and sixth holes, then made a two-putt par at the sixth and seventh holes, hitting his tee shot onto the fairway before ending his round early.
The PGA Tour has confirmed that Woods’ mid-round withdrawal was caused by illness rather than injuries. The former world No. 1 had his head in his hands as he was wheeled off the course in a buggy.
Longtime business associate and vice president of TGR Ventures Rob McNamara disclosed that Woods, a 15-time major winner, needed an IV after feeling lightheaded and ill before calling it quits on his round.
McNamara informed reporters, “So he started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night.” When I woke up this morning, they had gotten worse throughout the previous evening. His slight fever subsided throughout the warm-up, but as soon as he was outside strolling and playing, he began to feel lightheaded.
In the end, the physicians are stating that he was dehydrated and may have had the flu. After receiving treatment with an IV bag, he is significantly improving.
Not at all physical; he is in good back health. All of the symptoms were due to a medical condition called dehydration, which is already improving since he received an IV.
