Good News: The 49ers head coach Kyle and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid…

The 49ers head coach Kyle and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid…

The head coach rematch between Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan is the fourth in Super Bowl history.

Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers square off in Super Bowl 58 once more.

There has been a head coach rematch in the Super Bowl four times.

If Shanahan hopes to guide the 49ers to a record-tying sixth Super Bowl victory in franchise history, he also wants to steer clear of one Super Bowl tendency.

The winner of the first meeting also prevailed in the previous three head coach rematches in Super Bowl history.

Four years prior, Shanahan’s 49ers were defeated by Reid’s Chiefs in the Super Bowl 54 after they scored twenty-one straight fourth-quarter points. The Chiefs have since made two more Super Bowl appearances and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57.

The most recent information on Super Bowl 58, including matchups, facts, odds, and more.

The outcomes of the last three head coaching rematches in Super Bowls were as follows:

Chuck Noll in Super Bowl 13

Brady vs. Landry in Super Bowl Thirteen

The Pittsburgh Steelers, led by Chuck Noll, and the Dallas Cowboys, led by Tom Landry, faced off in a thrilling Super Bowl X, which is most remembered for game MVP Lynn Swann’s spectacular catches. The Steelers won 21–17 to win the Super Bowl for the second time in a row (and, at the time, to become the third team to win the Super Bowl twice in a row).

This titanic encounter took place three years later and was called the “Battle of Champions.” With 17 players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, seven coaches and administrators in the Hall of Fame, and Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy (who was a Steelers player at the time), this game may have had the greatest talent of any NFL championship in history.

In one of the greatest Super Bowls ever, the Cowboys, the defending champs, took on the Steelers. In a game full of memorable plays and iconic moments (“bless his heart, he’s got to be the sickest man in America”), the Steelers prevailed 35–31 over the Cowboys.

The Steelers went on to repeat as Super Bowl champions, while the Cowboys waited another 14 years before another title.

Marv Levy vs. Jimmy Johnson in Super Bowl 28

The Buffalo Bills participated in four straight Super Bowls in the 1990s, an accomplishment not even equaled by the New England Patriots under Tom Brady. All four of those Super Bowls, though, were losses for the Bills. The squad, led by head coach Jimmy Johnson, went from a 1-15 season in 1989 to championship winners in 1992 and 1993, both of which came at the expense of Marv Levy’s Bills. The final two games were played against the Cowboys.

The Cowboys won 52–17 in a rout in the first meeting. The second title game was tighter, but the Cowboys overcame a 13-6 halftime deficit to win 30-13 by scoring 24 straight points in the second half.

The Cowboys’ attempt to win their first Super Bowl three-peat was unsuccessful the next year, but they did win Super Bowl XXX against the Steelers, reliving the clubs’ historic 1970s matchup, when Barry Switzer abruptly took over as head coach. Since then, the Cowboys have not even been able to participate in the NFC championship game, while the Bills have only participated in one conference championship game—a 38-24 loss to the Chiefs in the 2020 season—since Super Bowl 28.

Super Bowl 46: Bill Belichick vs. Tom Coughlin

The Tom Coughlin-led New York Giants and Eli Manning-led Patriots have their number in Super Bowl victories during the Brady and Belichick era.

The Patriots had an incredible 18-0 record going into Super Bowl 42, making the first encounter noteworthy. Thanks to a nearly miraculous late-game catch by receiver David Tyree, the Giants defeated the Patriots 17–14, spoiling their chances of a perfect season.

Four years later, the Giants won a close game 21-17 over the Patriots once more. There was also a fantastic catch in this game. This time, the game-winning score was set up by Mario Manningham making a crucial catch near the sideline.

Though it took a few years, the Patriots made a comeback. The Patriots participated in four additional Super Bowls between the 2014 and 2018 seasons, winning three of them.
