Peter Corkum, a multisport athlete from Halifax who later had a prosperous career as a curling coach, passed away on Friday. He was eighty-three.

At Dalhousie, Corkum was a standout football and hockey player. Running back Corkum was named the team’s MVP two seasons after winning rookie of the year in 1957. Throughout the course of his five-year career, he ran for 2,515 yards and set a school record with 176 points scored in a single season.

He spent three seasons as a player for Dal, initially playing forward before moving to defence. He belonged to team M.

Corkum participated in three championship-winning Nova Scotia curling teams (1965, 1967, 1970) that made it to the Brier. In 1992, 1993, 1997, and 2003, he competed for the province in the Canadian senior men’s championships.

The greatest honours Corkum received in the sport were as a coach, having led Mark Dacey’s Brier championship team in 2004 and Colleen Jones to victory in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

He has the unique distinction of having coached two teams to world championships: one for women and one for men.

In 2008, he was admitted to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame.
