SAD NEWS TO HEAR: A recent suggestion by the coach of the NFC franchise is that Bill Belichick might lead the team in 2025.

A recent suggestion by the coach of the NFC franchise is that Bill Belichick might lead the team in 2025.

NFL sources speculated that a few teams, which had sad postseason performances, would be searching for a new head coach in addition to the list of known openings at the beginning of the 2024 offseason.

The Dallas Cowboys, who entered the postseason as the NFC favourite but were destroyed by the Green Bay Packers in the opening round, were one of the few teams that were not talked about.

That, along with their recent inability to succeed outside of the regular season, made Mike McCarthy’s status a talking point. Jerry Jones, the team owner, has never held back when it comes to sharing his thoughts on the Cowboys’ success or lack thereof. After the most recent defeat, there was some talk that suggested he might be trying to move on from the longstanding former Packers coach.

Jones felt that the team is very close to reaching their ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl, therefore he felt compelled to address the rumours and dispel the notion of dismissing McCarthy since they became a major storyline after Wild Card Weekend.

Even still, there was much discussion about Bill Belichick joining Dallas as early as the following season to take McCarthy’s job, particularly because the former Patriots coach is close friends with Jones.

In 2025, Bill Belichick might take over as the Cowboys’ head coach.

It appears that Belichick will not be coaching in the NFL in 2024, thus it is likely that he will wait it out and try to get a head coaching position again the following season. It’s hard to forecast a year ahead of time which teams will be searching for a new head coach, but there will undoubtedly be enough turnover for him to consider his options.

And perhaps among them are the Cowboys.

This week, during an interview with reporters, Jones appeared to allude to that possibility. When questioned about his discussions with Belichick this offseason over his potential hiring by the Cowboys, he remained silent. However, he made a remark that has led to even more conjecture when asked what he liked best about the head coach.

“I like him, and I know him personally. I have no doubt that we could collaborate. Not one. None.”

“I like him, and I know him personally. I have no doubt that we could collaborate. Not one. None.”

It’s reasonable to infer some meaning from his response given that it represents a significant departure from the original query. The two appear to have talked about Belichick moving south at some point, maybe even next season, as most take his comments to mean that the door is not completely closed.

That would make perfect sense as to why the head coach is apparently happy that he won’t be being hired for the upcoming campaign. However, it would also entail harbouring the less than ideal belief that the Cowboys will collapse once more the next season in order to replace McCarthy.

In any case, it’s a situation worth keeping an eye on over the coming year.
