With player and Darnell Savage’s pre-void extensions, the Packers may save almost $6.5 million on the 2024 salary cap.
The hard reality of years without work: Due to accelerated bonus money on voided contracts, the Green Bay Packers will still be responsible for around $7 million of the 2024 salary limit if Darnell Savage and Keisean Nixon, who are set to become free agents in the winter, sign elsewhere.
But there’s a way out for the crew. The Packers will be able to avoid paying the salary cap in 2024 if they choose to extend the contracts of Savage, Nixon, or both. If the Packers wish to retain both players until 2024, they have a reasonable chance of saving money if they extend Savage and Nixon before their contracts expire, since Over the Cap estimates that doing so may save them a total of $5 million.
Savage had a successful season in 2023 despite dealing with a few ailments. The Packers will probably need to select at least one veteran safety to return because both Rudy Ford and Jonathan Owens are eligible for free agency. Savage, a first-round pick in 2019, is one possibility.
Savage’s fifth-year option was given four vacant years by the Packers in order to reduce his 2023 salary cap charge. If his deal expires in February, the cost will become due in the form of a dead cap hit; however, an extension would halt the acceleration and result in savings of up to $4 million by 2024.
As an All-Pro kickoff returner for the second consecutive year, Nixon started every game in the slot. While the next defensive coordinator might prefer an improvement, Nixon is a dynamic returner who has the potential to be a great dime corner. It’s unclear how the Packers see him as a long-term option in the slot.
In 2023, after four years of inactivity, Nixon signed a one-year contract to return to Green Bay. According to OTC, his deal expires on February 19. The Packers’ 2024 salary cap will be accelerated by over $1.5 million when it happens. Just like Savage, the acceleration is stopped by an extension before the vacuum.
Yosh Nijman, an offensive tackle who returned on a restricted tender that includes vacant years in 2023, is the other candidate for an extension. Nijman and the Packers might choose to split ways given that he played only as a swing tackle in the previous campaign. An extension for Nijman could potentially save Green Bay almost $1.9 million. If Nijman’s agreement is nullified, this becomes a dead cap hit.
It’s important to note that despite adding void years to multiple contracts over the past few seasons, the Packers have never completed a pre-void extension. The organisation did not realise the potential savings of extending the contract prior to the void, but they did manage to bring back tight end Robert Tonyan and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell after their contracts expired.

The team is content with whatever McDermott wants to do, according to a statement made by General Manager Brandon Beane last week.
According to Beane, via Getzengberg, “If [McDermott] feels he needs to put someone else to call the plays, we would do that.” If he says, “Man, I really can accomplish this,” There was nothing that made me feel like he couldn’t wear both hats, so we would say, “I want to do it again.”
With 4 points allowed and 9 yards allowed, the Bills concluded the 2023 regular season in fourth place.
