Caleb Downs, a great safety for the old Alabama Crimson Tide, committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes this offseason, making him possibly the biggest name in the NCAA Transfer Portal.
The Buckeyes had already acquired a new starting quarterback in Will Howard and a standout running back in Quinshon Judkins, but Downs was the cherry on top.
And Downs was among, if not the best player on the team, as soon as he set foot on the Columbus campus.
It should therefore come as no surprise that Downs was the primary target of almost every programme in the nation as soon as he entered the portal. During his initial talks with the programme on Tuesday, Downs shared a bizarre narrative and talked candidly about the experience.
I had 102 calls in a single day—well, more like seven or eight hours—Downs remarked. “Making an informed decision for me required just being able to lessen the turmoil in my head.”
The Buckeyes ultimately prevailed despite the tremendous amount of interest in his talent, which came from premier programmes with previously great transfer hauls like Georgia, Texas, and others.
What, then, set the Buckeyes apart? The connection between Downs and assistant coach Tim Walton and head coach Ryan Day.
“I simply adore the curriculum here, Coach Walton, and the comments made by the locals. I have faith in this team and in Coach Day.
Now that Downs is a member of the Buckeyes, their already incredibly talented secondary is arguably the best in the nation. The former star of the Crimson Tide is expected to start alongside fellow safety Lathan Ransom, while the three cornerback spots are manned by Jordan Hancock, Denzel Burke, and Davison Igbinosun.
The 2024 All-American prospect found it easy to select the Buckeyes with their skilled secondary supported by an already formidable front seven.
He said, “They had excellent defence last year. “Making a wise decision and understanding what I would be getting into was made easier for me just by watching the film and seeing how they developed and how their defence performed last year.”
