Minnesota’s ‘Name a Snowplow’ contest winners can’t resist nods to Taylor Swift and Dolly Parton

The outcome of the election among Minnesotans is known.

Snowploughs owned by the Minnesota Department of Transportation have eight different names: Waipahinte, You’re Killing Me Squalls, Barbie’s Dream Plough, Beyonsleigh, Dolly Plowton, Taylor Drift and Clark W. Blizzwald.

On Tuesday, January 30, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, and Governor Tim Walz revealed the winning names.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said that over 32,000 voters participated in this year’s “Name a Snowplough” competition.

At the event revealing the names, Walz remarked, “You can count on Minnesotans to turn out and vote, whether it’s a November election or a snowplough naming contest.”

He thanked “Minnesotans for coming up with imaginative names and casting their votes for their favourites. We also appreciate our snowplough drivers for always being there to keep our roads safe and make sure we can get to work, school, and home safely.”

As she commended the winners, Flanagan said, “Minnesotans’ inventiveness was on full display for this contest that honours the important work of our snowplough drivers, from Beyonsleigh to Barbie’s Dream Plough.”

The eight districts of the Minnesota Department of Transportation will receive each winning plough.

With 12,027 votes, Taylor Drift was the most popular name.

Taylor Drift will be based in northwest Minnesota’s District 2.

Clark W. Blizzwald, which is in charge of sweeping the streets in District 3, central Minnesota, came in second. 6,667 votes went to Clark W. Blizzwald.

Dolly Plowton, who garnered 6,315 votes, completed the top three.

Dolly Plowton will be in northeastern Minnesota’s District 1.

Alice Scooper, L’Plow Du Nord, and Oh, For Sleet’s Sake were just outside the top eight names.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation asked the public to assist in naming a portion of its 800 snowploughs for the fourth consecutive year.

This year, more than 8,000 names were submitted by Minnesotans; 49 finalists were selected for public voting.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, 35 snowploughs in the state of Minnesota have names, including the winners from this year.

Of those, thirty-two were put to a vote by the general public, and three were selected by Minnesota Department of Transportation personnel.

Giiwedin, Goonodaabaan, and Icamna are three names that honour the native tribes who occupy the state.

Ojibwe terms “Giiwedin” and “Goonodaabaan” indicate “The North Wind” and “Snow Vehicle,” respectively, while Dakota words “Icamna” denote “blizzard.”

Waipahinte, the Dakota term for “snowplough,” was one of this year’s winners, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
