By the Numbers: The 49ers’ arsenal of weapons propelled them to a successful season and the Super Bowl.
The 49ers team has five Super Bowl trophies overall, tying with the Dallas Cowboys for second place in the NFL, behind only the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots with six apiece.
Between the 1981 and 1994 seasons, they had five titles. During that time, they had Hall of Fame quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young, NFL receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns leader Jerry Rice, and two Pro Bowl players in wide receiver Dwight Clark and running back Roger Craig.
They have fielded a total of five Pro Bowl players throughout their two Super Bowl defeats since, with precisely one AP First-Team All-Pro player on each offensive line.
The 49ers’ many attacking weapons present a plethora of potential dangers for opposition defences.
It all starts with quarterback Brock Purdy for the 49ers offence.
Following his selection as the 262nd and final choice in the 2022 draft, the 24-year-old acquired the moniker “Mr. Irrelevant.” Due to injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo, the backup quarterback, and Trey Lance, the starting quarterback on opening day, the 49ers were able to field an unexpected championship team last year thanks to the quiet rookie.
Before missing their 31-7 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles due to an elbow injury, Purdy had won his previous seven starts. This required off-season surgery to address the ailment.
After a successful operation, he finished the season as an MVP candidate, collecting 4,280 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and an NFL single-season record of 9.6 yards per pass attempt.
Purdy has company in the form of Christian McCaffrey, another MVP contender, who is in his second season with the 49ers following his trade acquisition from the Carolina Panthers the previous year.
Despite missing the season’s last game, McCaffrey led the NFL in running yards (1,459), scrimmage yards (2,023), and total touchdowns (21). In their two postseason victories this season, McCaffrey has 260 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns.
Both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, wide receivers, accounted for over 1,000 yards from scrimmage this season. Aiyuk, who ended 31st in receptions with 75, was ninth in the NFL in receiving yards (1,342).
Finally, after 60 receptions for 1,020 receiving yards and six touchdowns, tight end George Kittle was named to his second First-Team All-Pro team this season and received his sixth Pro Bowl selection.
Only six teams in NFL history have had four players finish with more over 1,000 scrimmage yards in a single season, and that group is the 49ers. The Carolina Panthers were the most recent club to do this in 2020.
