The top six Cowboys coaching prospects, ranging from Jim Harbaugh to Bill Belichick, to succeed Mike McCarthy
A deep playoff run has long been desired by the Cowboys. Since winning the 1995 season’s Super Bowl, Dallas has not seen a game advance past the divisional stage of the playoffs. A stronger conference made the 2023 Cowboys seem like a sure thing to make it to the NFC championship game.
It never took place like that. That was far from it. The Packers controlled the Cowboys at home, resulting in a 48-32 embarrassing wild-card loss. The Cowboys, ranked second, had just won the NFC East in Week 18.
The Cowboys’ fortunes were expected to turn around with the hiring of former Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy from the Packers. In three of McCarthy’s four seasons as head coach, Dallas has advanced to the postseason, finishing 12-5 annually. Both the divisional round in 2022 and the wild-card round in 2021 were losses for it. It is now eliminated following the wild-card round in 2023.
If their club makes the playoffs each season, there are some franchises who will be happy with that. Those teams do not include the Cowboys. There were larger hopes for McCarthy than just making it to the postseason, and he hasn’t performed up to par for a club that may contend for the Super Bowl.

With the start of Dallas’ offseason, it’s reasonable to assume that McCarthy may be placed under official investigation. And owner Jerry Jones might decide to look for a replacement quickly given the abundance of well-known coaches available, including a potential Hall of Famer who won a Super Bowl and is looking to prolong his career.
2024 Cowboys coaching prospects
Bill Belichick’s name will be associated more with a possible Cowboys opening than any other. Following a dismal season in New England, the Patriots and Belichick mutually decided to separate ways. Nonetheless, the 71-year-old coach seems ready to carry on with the headset, and teams like the Chargers and Falcons might be interested in signing him.
Some young, promising coaches have the potential to thrill rival fan bases and clubs. However, Jones has no intention of waiting to see if a coach is a good fit. His club is capable of winning right now, and he probably wants to see what a coach with Belichick’s background can accomplish when he takes over what is probably his best squad since the Patriots were the Super Bowl winners in 2018.
The primary concern around a prospective Belichick-Cowboys combination would be how to handle personnel decisions. In New England, Belichick held the position of general manager, which Jones currently has in Dallas. Would decisions be made jointly by the two? Would Jones give Belichick the role? Could Jones maintain Belichick’s concentration on the headset?
They call the Cowboys “America’s Team.” Bringing on the coach with the most Super Bowl rings and the second-most cumulative wins in NFL history between the regular season and playoffs may be the epitome of a “America’s Team” hire.
Jim Harbaugh’s entire career has been surrounded by rumours that Michigan would serve as a stopgap between his head coaching position with the 49ers and another NFL position. Although he has remained at Ann Arbour longer than many anticipated, there is increasing discussion that he is prepared to return to the NFL in the wake of his national championship victory.
The most of the conversation to date has been on Harbaugh and the Chargers, with many speculating that the attraction of leading Justin Herbert to Los Angeles may tempt him to go. However, Harbaugh may be able to add another club to the mix if he gets the opportunity to lead a talented squad in Dallas that features a second-team quarterback.
Throughout his four years as head coach of San Francisco, Harbaugh led the team to a 44-19-1 record and a Super Bowl participation. He has a long history of success with quarterbacks, especially in the NFL with Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.
Even since coming to Michigan, Harbaugh has made it clear that winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate sporting achievement and what he wants to do in the end with his career. It might take a strong roster and an owner who is aching for a championship to entice him back to the NFL.

As a defensive-minded head coach, Vrabel’s teams have exhibited the same toughness and physicality that he had throughout his NFL career. In terms of scoring average, Tennessee has only had two seasons where it finished in the lower half of the league.
