Three well-known Canadian curlers have joined forces to try to revitalise and reimagine the Pan Continental Curling Championships, which will take place in Lacombe, Alberta, next season.

Lacombe has a long history of curling and is a great place to curl. “That location is perfect for holding this event,” Moulding said to CBC Sports. “The facility is perfect, kept up nicely, and conveniently located near

Lacombe is a welcoming, giving community. The neighbourhood is a big supporter of sports of all types, and the curling rink has all the contemporary conveniences one could want.

The bid to host the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Lacombe, Alberta in 2024 was successfully submitted by curlers Darren Moulding, Chelsea Carey, and Colin Hodgson. Every aspect of the event will be designed with the athlete in mind.

This year’s Lacombe Pan Continental Curling Championships will be held for the third time. In 2021, the member associations of World Curling voted it in as a means of enhancing competitiveness and involvement in the Americas and Pacific-Asia. Additionally, it serves as a qualifying event for the world championships for both men and women.

At the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, the first bonspiel was held. Brad Gushue won gold for Canada, and Kerri Einarson brought home bronze. Gushue, who was representing Canada once again, was very critical of this year’s event in Kelowna, British Columbia, saying the athletes there were underappreciated.

Gushue claimed that the choice to conduct the competition at a curling club rather than an arena with larger space was the main reason why players had little room to warm up and practise, making the event an embarrassment to the sport and the competitors.

This past November, Gushue told CBC Sports, “There’s a level of incompetence there that needs to be corrected.”

“This week’s performance of the WCF is absurd. We’ve come a long way from the event of the previous year. Why they have chosen this path is beyond me. I am aware that teams must be given the opportunity to advance to worlds and other competitions. However, I believe there are several approaches to consider.”

Canadian curlers come into play

When Moulding, Carey, and Hodgson realised that curling needed to improve for both the competition and the sport, they took action together with other curlers and World Curling officials.

During their talks, the three realised there was a huge potential for the gathering to develop into something amazing, drawing in longtime players while making newcomers feel at home. They have been meticulous in their attention to detail to guarantee that players, volunteers, and fans get the utmost consideration and hospitality.

They devised a comprehensive plan that included playing at the 500-seat Lacombe curling club, the 1,600-seat arena in the area, and the Gary Moe Auto Group Sports Complex. The chair is moulded, Carey is in charge of player amenities especially, and Hodgso

The Alberta men’s provincial championship in 2014 and the women’s provincial championship in 2015 were previously held at the arena. According to Moulding, there was plenty of space for media and television cameras to cover the activities, which wasn’t the case in Kelowna.

Six sheets are available for use at the Lacombe curling club, and spectators can watch the action from two levels. Additionally, the club just invested a substantial sum of money on brand-new Canada Curling Stone rocks for 2021.

The curling club will host the B-side of the event, while the arena will hold the A-side games. Because the arena and curling club are connected, spectators may easily transition between the two locations.

The experience of working with World Curling has been wonderful. Collaboration, encouragement, and communication to make this event unique. Our fantastic group is dedicated to making this premier event a reality,” Moulding remarked.
