NEW UPDATE: Interview between Atlanta Falcons and the new coach as….

ATLANTA (AP) – In another indication that the Atlanta Falcons are considering options other than six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick, they spoke with Bobby Slowik, the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, twice on Thursday.

Slowik’s in-person visit follows his virtual meeting with the Falcons the previous weekend. The 36-year-old is regarded as one of the league’s best coaching prospects after assisting the Texans in making it to the postseason and managing the progress of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud.

After Belichick, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris of the Los Angeles Rams, and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero of the Carolina Panthers, Slowik is the fourth candidate to have a second interview with Atlanta.

The Falcons appeared to be taking steps towards hiring Belichick a week ago. Belichick left the New England Patriots after more than 20 years of service, which had become more difficult in the absence of quarterback Tom Brady.

The 71-year-old Belichick is only 14 victories short of Don Shula’s record with 333 wins overall (including playoffs). He has more Super Bowl triumphs than any other coach.

But even with the filling of other positions, the Falcons are still looking far and wide for Arthur Smith’s replacement. After three seasons with a 7-10 record in each, he was let go as the Falcons’ coach.

The Falcons had interviewed fourteen candidates in all, but two of them, offensive coordinator Brian Callahan of the Cincinnati Bengals and Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, had taken head coaching positions elsewhere.

After guiding the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship, Harbaugh was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers and made his NFL comeback, while Callahan signed a deal with the Tennessee Titans.

Callahan took over for Mike Vrabel, who had his contract cut by the Titans and had his first interview with the Falcons on Wednesday.

The only teams without a head coach are Atlanta, Washington, and Seattle. Five further vacancies have been filled.

If the Falcons choose to interview Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, or Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald again, their search may continue into the next week.

The search committee for Atlanta, headed by CEO Rich McKay and owner Arthur Blank, has met virtually with all of them; however, they are now unavailable until after Sunday’s conference championship games.
