A player was suspended by the Packers after almost confusing the coin toss.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers has been placed on the reserve/suspended list due to “conduct detrimental to the team” related to his involvement in the coin toss before to their 33-30 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The Minnesota Vikings, with whom the 7-8 Packers are currently tied for first place in the NFC North, are the team Alexander will miss on Sunday.

Alexander joined the three game captains of the Packers, Aaron Jones, Quay Walker, and Eric Wilson, at midfield before to last Sunday’s coin toss. Alexander correctly called tails, winning the toss. The cornerback then expressed his desire to play defence to referee Alex Kemp. Alexander replied in the affirmative when Kemp enquired as to whether he meant to defer.

Fans may believe that if a team wins the coin toss, they get to decide whether to kick or return to start the game, with the knowledge that the game will start in the other direction for the second half.

Actually, it’s a little more intricate than that. Teams are actually choosing when to kick or return to start a half, rather than just kicking or returning. If a team says, “we’ll receive,” it’s acceptable; they are merely expressing that they are choosing to receive the ball at this time.

That being said, you must never, ever say “we’ll kick.” Since the other team will make its decision at the beginning of the second half and will undoubtedly decide to receive, your team will kick off to start both halves. However, an official may read that as you choosing to start the game by kicking off. Players always say “defer,” meaning they are pushing their team’s decision to the second half for this reason.

Although Alexander wasn’t supposed to be in the Week 16 group, he stated LaFleur was aware that the game was being played in his hometown because the Packers have been switching around their captains every week.

“It’s just appropriate,” Alexander remarked. “I don’t think Coach knew I was from Charlotte.
