SAD NEWS: After a dismal run, El-Kanemi fires head coach Zubairu.

El-Kanemi Warriors fired head coach Abubakar Hassan Mai Zubairu after a run of disappointing performances.

The rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League matchup between the Maiduguri club and Kwara United ended in a 2-1 loss for the latter.

El-Kanemi Warriors have lost six of their past seven games and drawn one, becoming winless in that stretch.

Throughout their nine league games this season, the team has only managed one victory.

Together with the entire technical team, Mai Zubairu was fired.

Before the second half of the season begins, the club hopes to assemble a new technical team.

Warriors Coach Fired Receives US$90,000 Severance Payment

Zdravko Logarusic, the fired coach of the Warriors, has been handed a US$90,000 severance package. This comes after the team’s abysmal performance in the 2022 and Africa Cup of Nations games.

The Zimbabwe Football Association’s offer coincides with the fact that Logarusic has already received almost $133,000 in salary and benefits since his appointment in February of last year, according to the state-run Herald newspaper.

According to anonymous sources cited by the publication, Logarusic has already received US$33,000 of the US$90,000 severance payment.

It was unclear to the press if Logarusic accepted or rejected the offer. Zifa spokespersons Xolisani Gwesela and Logarusic did not answer calls on their cell phones, thus they could not be reached for comment.

Under Logarusic, the Warriors only emerged victorious once in 14 games. Along with him, the entire technical bench, which included assistant coaches Lloyd Chitembwe, Tonderayi Ndiraya, and Benjani Mwaruwari, was fired.

With Logarusic fired, Zifa named Norman Mapeza as the Warriors’ temporary coach.

Energy Murambadoro has been appointed as the new goalkeepers’ coach, and Mapeza will be aided by Highlanders’ Mandla Mpofu and Triangle coach Taurayi Mangwiro.

The unexpected absence of Benjani Mwaruwari from the new lineup is surprising, as he was anticipated to recover after losing his job along with Logarusic. – VOA
