Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies Rob Thomson can’t remember ever hearing a more thunderous response than what happened after Bryce Harper’s home run in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series in 2022.

On January 5, Thomson appeared as a guest on MLB Network’s Hot Stove show. The Phillies manager brought up Harper’s game-winning home run against the San Diego Padres late in Game 5 of the 2022 NLCS during his conversation with guests Matt Vasgersian and Anthony Recker.

With a 4-3 lead thanks to the eighth-inning home run, Philly was able to win the game, seal the series, and go to the World Series. One of the greatest moments in Philadelphia sports history is Harper’s home run.

The volume of the Citizens Bank Park crowd’s response after Harper made contact on the 2-2 pitch made Thomson consider it one of his most memorable coaching moments.

“The noise in the stadium was just louder than anything I’ve ever experienced in my life, the excitement,” Thomson said. “It was probably an at-bat with seven or eight pitches. In the at-bat, they only attempted one changeup, and Harp just stuck to his strategy. It was the most thrilling moment of my professional life.”

The Phillies radio play-by-play announcer Scott Franzke of Sports Radio 94 WIP called the event “Bedlam at the Bank” because of the tremendous response from the fans there. After Harper’s two-run home run, the audience expected to see the team win their first World Series since 2009.

Vasgersian made a suggestion on Harper’s special capacity to sway pitches in his favour when he batted. Only a select few batters are able to do it, Thomson said.

“As soon as [Harper] took that 1-2 changeup and got it to 2-2, I thought our chances of something really big happening go up.”

Throughout the first five years of his deal with Philadelphia, Harper has had many wonderful experiences. The greatest event he has had while wearing a Phillies jersey is the home run that preceded “Bedlam at the Bank”. He can only surpass the home run if he hits a crucial blow during a World Series game that puts the team in position to win its first pennant since 2008.
