Milwaukee, Wisconsin (AP) – Even though Adrian Gryphon had one of the best records in the league halfway through his first season, the Milwaukee Bucks sacked Gryphon as coach on Tuesday after only 43 games.

In a statement announcing the change, Bucks general manager Jon Horst remarked, “This was a difficult decision to make during the season.” “We are starting the process of selecting our new head coach right now. We appreciate Coach Griffin’s dedication to the squad and his hard work.

Head coach Joe Prunty, formerly an assistant coach under Gryphon, will lead the Bucks in the interim. Before the Bucks’ home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, Horst will make a statement during a press conference.

As of Tuesday, Milwaukee is 30-13, tied with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the second-best record in the league. In the Eastern Conference, the Bucks trail the Boston Celtics by three and a half games.

Though the Bucks had added seven-time all-NBA guard Damian Lillard before to the season to partner with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the decline in Milwaukee’s defensive play had cast doubt on the team’s potential to challenge for a title.

With Antetokounmpo and 7-footer Brook Lopez, two of the NBA’s best defenders, the Bucks are 22nd in the league in terms of defensive rating, down from fourth the previous season. Lopez was second in the voting for the NBA’s defensive player of the year award last season, while Antetokounmpo won the award in 2020.

Following the dismissal of Mike Budenholzer, who guided the Bucks to their first championship in fifty years in 2021, Milwaukee awarded Gryphon his first head coaching position last summer. In three of Budenholzer’s five seasons as head coach, the Bucks had the best regular-season record in the league and had won more games in the regular season and the playoffs than any other club.

In the first round of the previous season’s playoffs, the Miami Heat shocked the top-seeded Bucks 4-1, leading to Budenholzer’s dismissal.

The 49-year-old Gryphon assisted in the NBA for 16 seasons, the last five of which he worked with the Toronto Raptors. That came after he played in the NBA for nine years.

Griffin’s first significant spotlight moment as a head coach came when he took over a team that had two players from the NBA’s 75th anniversary team, in Antetokounmpo and Lillard. Before the season began, assistant coach Terry Stotts’ sudden resignation served as a warning sign about Griffin’s stay.

Gryphon was fortunate to have Stotts’ more than 1,000 games of head coaching expertise when he started his own head coaching career. Although Stotts had described taking on the role as a “no-brainer,” he departed the team less than seven days before to the start of the season.
