REPORT: Among the Game-Changing Misses in NFL Divisional Round History are the Missed Kicks by the Bills and Packers
Two crucially missed field goals cost the Packers in a tight game against the 49ers on Saturday. With two minutes remaining, the final missed field goal would have given the squad a seven-point lead and a little safety net. Rather, the Niners seized control and easily marched down the field to score the game-winning touchdown.
With one minute remaining on Sunday, the Bills had a chance to tie the game. Tyler Bass, the kicker, was performing in his own stadium. From 44 yards out, Bass would make the game all about his boot. The kick was high, but it never had a chance. The ball flew wide to the right, giving the Chiefs possession, and they ended the game by kneeling.
In 1995, there was the first notable field goal miss in NFL Division Round history. With only 42 seconds remaining in the game, the top-seeded Chiefs had an opportunity to equalise the score. With a failed attempt from 42 yards out, Lin Elliott gave the Jets an unexpected 10-7 win. This began “The Arrowhead Curse,” which prevented the Chiefs from winning a postseason game at home. Patrick Mahomes overcame the curse more than 20 years later.
The Jets hosted the Steelers in 2004 as the following event. As time ran down, kicker Doug Brien had a chance to win the game in regulation if he made the 43-yard field goal. Brien missed the crossbar, and the Jets would ultimately lose this game in extra time.
The Steelers prevailed as a consequence of yet another crucially missed field goal. In 2006, the Colts were among the best teams in the NFL. With a 13-0 start to the season, Peyton Manning was playing some of the finest football of his career. Despite having such a good season, Mike Vanderjagt’s kick was unsuccessful in tying the game and forcing OT, leaving the Colts disappointed.
What if this weekend was the kickers’ kicks?
The game most likely would have gone into overtime if Anders Carlson had made at least one of his field goals. The majority of the game went back-and-forth, making it difficult to predict who would win, but at the very least, this would have given the Packers fresh life and the opportunity to win in overtime.
The Chiefs could have had enough time to score if Tyler Bass made his game-winning field goal, but overtime would be required if the Bills made a stop in the final seconds. After making an important save, Buffalo would have the whole momentum in their favour and could exploit that to win in the extra time. In the NFL, it’s simple to speculate about hypothetical scenarios, but it may be entertaining to consider what could have happened.
