Former wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins now with the DC Defenders

Preston Williams, a former wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, will play football again later this year with the United Football League’s DC Defenders. On December 14, the Defenders signed wide receiver Williams and C.J. Johnson, according to transactions wire.

Williams, 26, caught 56 catches for 787 yards and seven touchdowns in 24 games over his three seasons with the Dolphins. The former Colorado State wide receiver finished 2021 with eight games played due to a foot injury, despite having 18 catches for 288 yards and four touchdowns.

In2022, he joined on to the Carolina Panthers practice squad, but he didn’t play until the team’s 10-7 victory against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. Sam Darnold, the starting quarterback, only completed five of his fifteen pass attempts for 43 yards during the victory.

Six other receivers for the Defenders are on the active roster: Josh Hammond, Kelvin Harmon, Chris Rowland, Ty Scott, and Jazz Ferguson. Last season, DC went 9-1 and took first place in the XFL North. In the division finals, they beat the Seattle Sea Dragons 37-21, but the Arlington Renegades defeated them 35-26 to win the XFL Championship.

After the Bills’ playoff defeat to the Chiefs, wide receiver Gabe Davis discusses his future free agency.

Due to a PCL sprain, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis was unable to participate in either of the team’s two postseason games this year. As a result, it’s highly likely that Davis’s last game with the Bills occurred during the regular season finale against the Miami Dolphins, in which he was unsuccessful for the fifth time in his career in terms of receptions.

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, “Davis told reporters in the Bills’ locker room today that he expects to see what other teams are ready to offer him when free agency begins in March before he makes any decisions about where he’s playing in 2024 and beyond.” “Davis expressed his willingness to stay in Buffalo, but he’s interested in exploring other options.”

Based alone on his potential, there are undoubtedly a few clubs out there who will be willing to pay Gabe Davis a lot more than Buffalo would. Expectations for the former fourth-round choice have been very high ever since Davis erupted for eight receptions, 201 yards, and four touchdowns in the Bills’ AFC Divisional Round defeat to the Chiefs two years ago. Davis had a good season for the second straight year (45 receptions for 746 yards and 7 touchdowns) but was far from the player he seemed to be in the semifinal game at Arrowhead Stadium two years before.

In light of the fact that Stefon Diggs, Dalton Kincaid, James Cook, and maybe even Khalil Shakir are the Bills’ top options in the passing offence going ahead, would the Bills actually spend the type of money Davis is anticipating? It appears that discussions about an extension would have taken place at some point during the season if they had Davis in their long-term plans. Regarding a back-and-forth about an extension, Davis, however, said that “there was nothing” (h/t ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg).
