Allegations of coasting through games have apparently left Dinwiddie unhappy in Brooklyn. The former Colorado Buffaloes standout is scoring 13.5 points per game on average, which is his lowest output since 2021–2022. He made his comeback from an ACL tear throughout the season.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe examined some more data that seems to support their assertions. In five of Brooklyn’s last seven games, he has tried six field goals or less, and in that span, he has only attempted 16 2-point attempts overall. That is a point guard in appearance only—half-present, half-floating. According to Second Spectrum, Dinwiddie is averaging 14 drives per 100 possessions, which is the second-lowest rate of his career. His rim-shot percentage is almost at a career-low. Both figures are increasing. It almost seems as if Dinwiddie is on a strike.

Maybe Dinwiddie’s spark would flare again because the Lakers are needy for playmakers. Strangely, Dinwiddie scored well in the Nets’ game against the Lakers last night. A 19-point performance on only 11 shots was plenty to help the Nets defeat the Lakers 130-118.

The History of Dinwiddie
The main reason Dinwiddie is so beloved by Nets supporters is the contributions he made during his first season in Brooklyn. The Detroit Pistons selected Dinwiddie in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft. In 2016, the Chicago Bulls acquired Dinwiddie. Before being dismissed, he made only one preseason appearance with the Bulls.

A few months later, Brooklyn made the decision to sign him, and that’s how Dinwiddie established himself in the NBA. In 2019–20, he had his greatest season with an average of 20.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 6.8 assists. That year, thanks to the Toronto Raptors, the Nets qualified for the playoffs but lost in the first round.

Lakers Exchange Items
Dinwiddie is nearing the end of a $34 million, three-year deal. It would be simple for the Lakers to get Dinwiddie if they were interested in trading D’Angelo Russell. Russell signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Lakers this past summer; he is now in the first year of the agreement. Between 2017 and 2019, Russell spent his greatest years in Brooklyn as a star with Dinwiddie. Though the former Ohio State player is three years younger than Dinwiddie, the Lakers could be hesitant to bring on another veteran player.

Rui

The Lakers may also consider trading for Rui Hachimura. LA inked Hachimura to a three-year, $51 million contract deal in the summer with high expectations for him. The 25-year-old had a strong first season with the Purple and Gold in 2022–2023, but he has struggled since.

The Lakers have made so many roster changes in recent years that it makes one question whether sticking with their current lineup is the solution they so badly want to avoid. In any case, LA seems determined to relocate. Is a trade for Dinwiddie the Lakers’ best option?
