The historic moment for the 2023 No. 1 overall draft selection occurred on Wednesday, when the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons 130-108 on the road.
The French sensation became the youngest centre in NBA history to record a triple double, scoring 16 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists without giving the ball up once, according to StatMuse.
“Wemby” is the only player in the last 40 seasons to record a triple double in less than 22 minutes of play, along with former MVP Russell Westbrook.
“Obviously, achieving victory is crucial,” Wembanyama said to the reporters after the match. It is important to me. I’m not the kind to chat endlessly. As a team, we want to make a statement like this, and as a player, I want to make a statement like this.
His incredible one-handed full-court pass to Jeremy Sochan, who had a career-high assist total, was one of his highlights.

After losing its previous five games, San Antonio finally won over the similarly bad Pistons team. The two clubs had a miserable 8-64 combined record heading into their game on Wednesday.
When the Detroit Pistons defeated the Toronto Raptors on December 30, they ended their losing run, but since then, they have now dropped six consecutive games, matching the NBA record for the longest losing streak at 28 games.
The Pistons were among the favourites to choose Wembanyama after having the poorest record in the league the previous season. However, they were unable to select the Frenchman as they were selected with the fifth choice in the lottery.
When asked whether he had considered starting his NBA career with Detroit somewhere else, Wembanyama said, “It’s weird to imagine a different future and what it could have been.” “But I’m glad things are the way they are.”
Part of the Spurs’ extraordinarily balanced scoring output was Wembanyama’s historic night. Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson led the way with 16 and 17 points respectively off the bench, while eight players scored in double digits.
Centre Bojan Bogdanović and Jaden Ivey each had 19 points and 12 rebounds, but it was insufficient to give the NBA’s statistically worst club its fourth victory of the year. Jalen Duren scored 21 points and pulled down 12 boards for the Pistons.
Detroit was unable to outscore San Antonio in a single quarter despite being without its injured star point guard, Cade Cunningham.
After a disappointing first half of the season—the Spurs are currently 6-30 with the much-needed victory, while the Pistons dropped to 3-35—both teams probably already have one eye on this year’s draft lottery.
On Friday, both teams are back in action: Detroit plays the Houston Rockets at home, while San Antonio hosts the Charlotte Hornets.
