With the Dallas Cowboys struggling mightily in January once more, concerns over quarterback Dak Prescott’s ceiling have surfaced.
After leading the league in touchdowns with 36 passes for 4,516 yards and a second-team All-Pro selection, Prescott had the finest regular season of his career.
But after Sunday’s humiliating playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, a large portion of the goodwill he had accumulated during the regular season evaporated. Despite his impressive stat line of 403 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, the majority of his output occurred when the game was already well out of reach. However, those two interceptions—one of which was a pick six—directly resulted in two scores for the Packers, thereby putting the nail in the Cowboys’ coffin.
While fans argue about whether or not Prescott can really lead Dallas to the pinnacle, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy—who recently got off the hot seat—has not lost faith in his quarterback.
McCarthy stated, “I think it demonstrates our connection and our belief in the path we’re taking. As I already stated, I think highly of Dak Prescott. He seems to be the solution. He is a component of the future solution. Even though this is a challenging moment, I believe we can get through this emotional phase. We’ll keep expanding on the contributions he makes.”
During the regular season, Prescott has shown that he is a very good quarterback, if not outstanding. It would be very challenging to discover a glaring improvement under center after he threw more than 35 touchdowns in two of his previous three seasons.
On the other hand, things change in the postseason. Prescott has one of the poorest playoff records in league history (2–5) in addition to having far poorer passing stats.
It will be difficult for the Cowboys to decide on Prescott this offseason. Would they risk it all on him performing well in the postseason and give him a contract extension that reduces his upcoming $59 million cap charge in exchange for his success in the regular season and getting cap-compliant by March 13?
Or do they decide to play it safe and sign a fat contract for a quarterback who can depart after the season in 2024, hoping against hope that a different quarterback (Coach Rush, Trey Lance, maybe) will finally be able to lead them to victory.
McCarthy made a clear decision. He currently has a one-year contract, and Dak also does. They are interwoven as a possible combination “solution.”
However, McCarthy was once the focus of the Cowboys front office’s dedication to him: an extension. It’s not now.
