TRADING: Legend of the Green Bay Packers has joined the New York Jets.
Aaron Rodgers, who announced his decision to play for the New York Jets in the next season, said he was all but retired until he learned that the Green Bay Packers were trying to dump him around the league.
This summer, the four-time MVP’s future has been the talk of the town. On Wednesday, the man himself revealed the information that New York Jets supporters had been hoping for but Packers fans had been fearing.
Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show, “As of Friday, I made it clear that I intended to play on and to play on with the New York Jets.”
The 39-year-old maintained that the two clubs’ agreement on a trade transaction is the only thing holding up his departure at this time, despite accusations that he was taking advantage of the situation and dragging his feet.
The compensation dispute between the Jets and the Packers is the main source of contention. Although I have a contract with the Packers, my intention is to play for the Jets.”
In an excerpt from the interview, Rodgers said that he believed the NFL was over when he left Lambeau Field at the conclusion of the previous campaign.
Packers make Rodgers reconsider retiring
After his well reported dark retreat, Aaron Rodgers claims he was 90% sure he would retire going into the process, but things changed when he saw the Packers seemed to be actively trying to move him.
“All I was told at the end of the season was to take as long as you want, we want you to retire as a Packer,” Rodgers said, recalling his discussions with Green Bay.
“Something changed as I emerged from the shadows. I became aware that something had changed when I heard from reliable sources inside the league that some shopping was taking place and that they would want to see me depart.”I was 90-10 certain that I would retire before the light went out. I’m not sure what had changed, but it was obvious to me when I came out that Green Bay wanted to go on.”I’ve thus turned my attention to what playing on would entail. They allowed the Jets to visit, and during our pleasant talk, they said, “I love Green Bay, I just wish that had been the conversation right from the start – just tell me that you wanted to move on because I’m big on straight communication.”
How much is Aaron Rodgers worth in a trade?
Now, all eyes will be on the Jets and Packers to see whether they can reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
The two biggest quarterback transactions of the last several years have included Matt Stafford and Russell Wilson, who were both acquired for two first-round selections in addition to other players and choices.
Although Rodgers and other two guys are five years younger than Rodgers, they are not Aaron Rodgers, who is considered the best quarterback of his generation and does not seem to be losing power in his arms.
The Packers want to move on to Jordan Love, who they picked as his successor three years ago, and now that he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder, the Jets will be receiving a certain Hall of Famer with something to prove.
As they bid farewell to the Rodgers era after 15 years with their best player ever, Green Bay will still anticipate some respectable compensation, even if it may not bring in as much as Stafford or Wilson did.
