TRADING: The Pittsburgh Steelers have added 17 new players to their roster, including….
On January 17, 2024, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed 17 players to reserve/future contracts as part of an aggressive roster-building effort. A combination of proven and exciting players are part of the signing frenzy, with wide receiver Marquez Callaway standing out among the others.
Marquez Callaway: An Encouraged Feature
Previously not on the Steelers practice squad, Callaway is a skilled athlete who led the New Orleans Saints in receiving yards and touchdowns in the 2021 campaign. His playing background from his stints with the Saints, Denver Broncos, and Las Vegas Raiders is extensive. In addition to his significant contributions to return yards on punts and kickoffs, Callaway has amassed 83 receptions for 1,069 yards and 7 touchdowns over his career. His inclusion in the starting lineup should significantly improve the offensive powers of the Steelers.
Other Prominent Signatures and Exclusions
Despite his poor performances and absence from the field in 2023, former second-round selection Denzel Mims stands out among the other signees. The Steelers’ choice to sign Mims implies that they have faith in his ability to develop and become better. It’s interesting to note that the Steelers decided not to sign five members of their practice squad, including running back Anthony McFarland Jr. and nose tackle Breiden Fehoko. This does not, however, exclude future partnerships with these players.
The Importance of Future/Reserve Contracts
NFL clubs often use reserve/future contracts to lock down players for the summer and prepare for the next campaign. Though they will not be formally under contract with the organisation until the start of the new league year in March, their acquisitions count against the Steelers’ 90-man offseason roster. The Steelers are strengthening their roster and securing potential talent by signing these players in an attempt to prepare for a successful 2024 season.
