When the San Francisco 49ers take on the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks is aware that stopping Jordan Love will be challenging. Wilks thinks it’s not impossible, however.
Nevertheless, the Packers need to avoid a few things in order for the 49ers to decrease Love’s impact. It turns out that saying it is easier said than done.

As they get ready for their divisional round matchup, Wilks spoke with reporters on Wednesday to discuss Love’s development and how much the Packers quarterback has gained by playing behind Aaron Rodgers.
Prior to Rodgers’ departure in the 2023 offseason, Love was the starting signal-caller for the first two years of his career as a backup to the renowned quarterback.
Wilks expressed his admiration for Love’s ball-protection style, which 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan cited as one of the factors contributing to the Packers’ recent success.
“I believe he’s really talented. I believe he was NFC Player of the Week for a good portion of the season—possibly two or three times. He’s accomplishing a lot of amazing things, but I believe that guarding the ball is his main accomplishment. Wilks said of Love, via 49ers WebZone, “He’s putting the ball where it needs to go.”
When you consider a young player like that, you tend to forget that he really spent three years playing behind Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the New York Jets. He has thus gained a great deal of knowledge. He is an adult. On the pitch, it is evident. Even when you consider the following: let’s say this individual has a high % against pressure; let me apply pressure to him. Thus, he performs a fantastic job of removing the ball.
Wilks emphasised that it would be difficult to stop Love given the manner he is playing and his newly discovered confidence.

In response to a question on his strategy for stopping Jordan Love, Steve Wilks stressed that the San Francisco 49ers’ primary goal should be to eliminate their run game and render the Green Bay Packers’ offence “one-dimensional.”
The next task, if they succeed, is to make Love’s life difficult by forcing him to ponder a lot. The idea behind such tactic is that Love would quickly make errors.
The most important thing, in my opinion, is to try to halt our attempts to reduce things to one dimension. They run a ball rather well. It only, in my opinion, opens up the play action. Here, he demonstrates his exceptional ability to locate an open receiver by taking shots down the field. That makes it the top item. However, in order to give him something to consider and help him choose where he should go with the ball, we just need to attempt to switch things up a little bit, Wilks said.
Whether the 49ers can pull it off is still up in the air. For Love’s part, at least he now knows what the Niners are going to attempt.
