TRADING NEWS: U of M football player signed with the Green Bay Packers, heading to the NFL

Geoff Grey claims he never gave the NFL any attention, but that’s precisely where he wants to end up.

Following defence lineman David Onyemata’s signing with the New Orleans Saints last year, the 22-year-old offensive lineman became the second player from the University of Michigan to earn a berth in the NFL in as many years on Saturday when he signed as a priority free agency with the Green Bay Packers.

“It’s nothing that I ever really, like, thought about ever happening going into it,” Grey said on Sunday at a University of Minnesota spring camp.

“I don’t think about it one way or the other; it’s not that I doubt myself.” I just keep doing what I’m doing—playing football, exercising, and so on—without really considering the long-term effects of my actions. I did not,” he said.

“I just kind of went along doing my thing and it just seems to work out well.”

The six-foot-six, 310-pound athlete described the draft weekend as busy as he courted teams. He has been in discussions with a few other clubs, such as the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

However, Grey had previously visited the Packers programme and reported receiving positive vibes from the squad and coach.

“So it came down to it that the Packers said, ‘Hey, we need to move onto our second option if you don’t decide soon,’ so you kind of put the pressure on and I just kind of went with my gut on it,” he said.

NFL scouts are interested in Manitoba Bisons quarterback
Brian Dobie, the head coach of the Bisons, said that he wasn’t surprised to see Grey travelling to the NFL.

“I think as an offensive lineman, his intelligence is extremely evident and I think that’s a big part of it,” Dobie said. “Playing that position is difficult. Some may disagree, but I believe that the quarterback position is the hardest in football to play cerebrally, second only to it.

“I would constantly say, ‘He’s a Stanford person, he’s a Harvard type guy,’ when I was trying to introduce Geoff to all the NFL folks. That’s what that component would entail for you.

The Seattle Seahawks selected offensive tackle Justin Senior in the draft, while tight end Anthony Auclair and defensive lineman Eli Ankou signed as free agents. Over the weekend, three more Canadian athletes become members of NFL clubs.

Football player for the Manitoba Bisons, Geoff Grey, displays his unicycling prowess to NFL scouts on Thursday in Winnipeg.
Coaches and players at the Bisons are proud today, according to Dobie.

“It says a lot about Canadian college football,” he said.

“Those who aren’t attending the games are losing out on a fantastic experience. Yes, of course, we’re not in Alabama. Furthermore, I’m not just referring to Manitoba; I’m also referring to U SPORTS,” he said. “But I’ll tell you what, a lot of these guys will be turned into the CFL and the odd man will end up in the NFL over the course of the next four or five years.
