The Green Bay Packers’ defence has improved over the last several weeks under defensive coordinator Joe Barry, and San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is thrilled.

The Packers placed 17th in the NFL at the end of the 2023 regular season despite having a below-average overall defence. However, that permeable wall was not visible during the Dallas Cowboys’ tough-luck 48-32 victory in the Wild Card round.

Despite scoring 32 points, the Cowboys were unable to mount an offensive comeback until the fourth quarter’s garbage time. Dallas managed only 16 points through three quarters, but the Green Bay offence, spearheaded by Aaron Jones and Jordan Love, had already pulled away with 41 points.

The Packers defended their own quarterback, Love, by picking off Dak Prescott twice and sacking him four times. In addition to not allowing a single sack, the Green Bay offensive line set up 143 running yards.

When questioned about Joe Barry’s contributions to the Green Bay Packers’ defence and how it performed against the Dallas Cowboys, Kyle Shanahan responded to questions from media on Tuesday. As expected, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers showed his appreciation for them by calling them “extremely sound.”

Shanahan said in particular that the 49ers and the Packers should be wary of the Packers defense’s increasing health as a significant influence when they play in the divisional round.

“They had a great appearance against Dallas. I didn’t have to watch many of them until the last ten days, and the past two days have clearly seen me take it up much more. These seem like a rather strong defence. According to 49ers WebZone, Shanahan said of the Packers’ defence, “The numbers don’t always tell the truth.”

“They’re terrific in the run and pass, but they had a few games where they gained some cheap yards. The quarterback is reachable by them. They have great sound quality. Their health is improving. Great regard for Joe. He was my boss throughout my first few years of employment in Tampa. He’s faced him a few times with the Rams and been a part of many different defences. Then, in Green Bay, his plan just becomes more and more sensible.

It’s not difficult to see the Packers pulling off an upset if they can continue to mimic their previous success against the 49ers. Indeed, however, Shanahan and company will make every effort to be ready for that task.

49ers player Nick Bosa discusses the distinctions between Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love.

Defensive player of the year in 2022 and 2023 (as well as a member of the Pro Bowl for the third time in a row), Nick Bosa is one of the players that the Green Bay Packers will need to keep a close eye on when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. Bosa gave a Tuesday interview to the San Francisco local media on the next game. During the interview, he praised Jordan Love, the Packers’ rookie quarterback.

What Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of San Francisco, speaks about is how the club as a whole has become better all season long. Many of the players from their previous excellent teams are back, and they have a quarterback who performs precisely as his coach has instructed.

Though Aaron Rodgers is an incredible Hall of Famer, he sort of stepped beyond the bounds of coaching, and sometimes it’s best to have a player that performs as instructed.

A common concern among fans after Rodgers’ offseason trade to the New York Jets was how head coach Matt LaFleur would implement his offence without the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player. How much of Rodgers’s success in Green Bay was still him taking advantage of freelance chances as opposed to “running the system” that LaFleur put in place?

It seems that Bosa, at the very least, believes that Love is “running the system,” whereas Rodgers was, in some ways, violating the offense’s rules while he was playing at centre.

The offensive mechanism seems to be functioning well if Love is just following orders. Love has thrown 21 touchdowns to only one interception since Week 11, certainly the greatest ratio among eligible quarterbacks during this span. During this period, only one quarterback—Brock Purdy of the 49ers—has produced greater adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A) than Love (8.68 yards per play). However, Purdy (9.45) did it while completing 106 less throws than the quarterback for Green Bay.

Respect for one other’s offences seems to exist between these ballclubs. That should convert into fireworks on Saturday, hopefully.
