A player that’s is more concerned with the players than he is with the Cowboys-Packers playoff hoopla.

Prior to the Green Packers game last season, which marked his first meeting with his old team since taking the helm of the Dallas Cowboys as head coach in 2020, Mike McCarthy acknowledges that he was overly forthcoming and exposed to the media.

Before being fired in 2018, McCarthy led the Packers for 13 seasons and was the team’s Super Bowl champion in 2009. Before Green Bay’s 2022 season ended in a 31-28 overtime loss at Lambeau Field, he gave in to nostalgia and waxed poetic about his time there.

The 60-year coach has learned his lesson, despite the media’s continued hype surrounding Sunday’s wildcard game between the Cowboys and Packers as a McCarthy playoff reunion.

And this time, he’s not going to play ball. His family moved from Green Bay to Dallas in 2020, so that might not go over too well at home. However, he will exert control over what he can manage.

Despite their present commitment to the Cowboys, McCarthy’s family, who were raised as Packers supporters, still keeps in touch with old pals. “I mean, I’ve got a wife and three daughters, obviously two sons, but I can’t win in that house,” McCarthy remarked.

McCarthy took a firm stand on Sunday following the Cowboys’ victory against the Washington Commanders in the season finale, which guaranteed them the NFC East championship and the No. 2 seed in the postseason. He shut it down right away after learning that the Packers would be the Cowboys’ playoff opponent.

McCarthy remarked, “I’m sure you all will love the drama of it.” This year, I’m not going to take part. Postseason play is underway. It is irrelevant who we play with. When asked about the Packers game on Monday, McCarthy remained steadfast. Regardless of the Cowboys’ player, he stated that winning the game is all that counts.

It’s playoff time, which is, in my opinion, the biggest thing, said McCarthy. “This is our moment to all be self-centered. Every participant. Every coach. Each and every support staff person. We are exactly where we should be. We must make the most of that opportunity. That’s all we really want—that tightness and commitment. A year ago, I felt it was imperative that I start the week with a discussion about Green Bay. Along with the team, I did. I felt bad about it. It is not even necessary for something to enter our energy basis.

You thus learn by living. This is a game about our dedication. It makes no difference to whom we pay. I’m not invested in it. There simply isn’t time for that. I was honest when answering the questions about my experience up there last year. Simply put, it won’t help us win. I’m not interested in anything, therefore, if it doesn’t help us win a game. I’m sorry.

Why did he feel bad discussing it? It’s a game for players. McCarthy stated, “It always has been and always will be.” It should only be concentrated on it. There are, in my opinion, twenty-four hours in a day, seven days to prepare, and any time spent on anything other than winning is time wasted. I promise not to do that again. They needed to speak on my behalf in the locker room and they put that on their hearts.
