The Syracuse Orange and South Florida Bulls will face off in the 10th annual Boca Raton Bowl. The former Big East rivals will get to reignite the rivalry on Thursday night in Florida. Syracuse snuck into bowl eligibility with a 6-6 record. They won their final game of the regular season 35-31 over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Syracuse lost five games in a row mid-season but won two of their last three to get six wins. South Florida also earned bowl eligibility in their final game of the season, picking up a 48-14 win over Charlotte. South Florida was a top-25 offensive team in the country, but their defense couldn’t assist in leading the group to a better record.

Syracuse started the season strong with a 4-0 record, including an impressive non-conference win over Purdue. The strong start made people believe they could be a contender in the ACC, but they failed to show up against the conference competition. They lost at home to Clemson and were blown out on the road by North Carolina, Florida State, and Virginia Tech. They had the chance to rebound at home against lowly Boston College, but their starting quarterback was unavailable, and the backup, Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, threw four interceptions. A season that began with four consecutive wins was now in danger of finishing without a bowl appearance. Syracuse rebounded with two wins in their final three games to get bowl eligibility and slot into the Boca Raton Bowl.

Syracuse fired Dino Babers last month, naming Nunzio Campanile as his replacement. Nunzio led the team to a win over Wake Forest and an improbable bowl game. Campanile will work the sidelines on Thursday, but Syracuse decided to hire Fran Brown to be their head coach next season. This will be the first time Syracuse has played back-to-back bowl games since the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Syracuse will be without the top two quarterbacks on their depth chart for the Boca Raton Bowl. Garrett Shrader was the team’s starter until a shoulder injury sidelined him for points at the end of the season. Shrader miraculously returned for the regular season finale against Wake Forest, throwing three touchdowns. Shrader opted to get shoulder surgery after the game but was proud that he could lead the team to their bowl game before doing so.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen tossed two touchdown passes, running back Zach Moss scored twice, and the Bills took out Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with a rib injury early in the game on their route to a shutout.

Tagovailoa barely lasted two series before being taken to the locker room after being knocked out of the game on a failed fourth-down play.

Jacoby Brissett, a former William T. Dwyer Community High School standout, took over for Tagovailoa, completing 24 of 40 throws for 169 yards.

It was the Bills’ sixth straight series triumph and their highest margin of victory in series history.

The Bills led 10-0 at halftime and 19-0 in the third quarter before the Dolphins rallied.

Miami quarterback Jay Cutler was replaced after three snaps by David Fales, who completed 29 of 42 throws for 265 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also scored one run.

Wide receiver Jarvis Landry scored the Dolphins’ first touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard reception from Fales, but he was later dismissed, along with running back Kenyan Drake and offensive lineman Jake Brendel, for fighting.

Miami recovered an onside kick with 49 seconds remaining, but Fales threw an interception to seal the victory for Buffalo.

The victory broke the Bills’ 17-year playoff drought, as they qualified for the postseason for the first time since 1999.

In the playoff loss, Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino completed 33 of 64 throws for 422 yards and two touchdowns but also threw three interceptions.

In what turned out to be Don Shula’s final game as Miami’s head coach, the Bills established a dominating 27-0 lead into the fourth quarter and set a playoff-record 341 running yards.

Shula, who had coached the Dolphins since 1970 and guided them to back-to-back Super Bowl titles, as well as the NFL’s only perfect season, retired soon after. His 347 career victories, including seven seasons with the Baltimore Colts, remain the most of any coach to date.

On October 25, 1987, the Buffalo Bills defeated the Miami Dolphins 34-31 in overtime at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

These five games had Bills fans celebrating and Dolphins fans cringing.

In their first meeting at Joe Robbie Stadium, the Bills recovered from a 21-0 hole to overcome the Dolphins 34-31 in overtime.

Dan Marino threw 24 of 36 throws for 303 yards and four touchdowns for Miami, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Buffalo’s second-half rally.

Bills running back Robb Riddick scored three of the team’s four touchdowns – two on the ground and one via the air – to give Buffalo a 31-24 lead, but Marino connected with Mark Clayton on a 12-yard score in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

Bills quarterback Jim Kelly completed 29 of 39 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns, leading the game-winning drive in overtime that set up Scott Norwood’s 27-yard field goal.

Marino and many of Miami’s stars were making their regular-season debuts in the team’s new home after the 1987 NFL strike forced the cancellation of the team’s original opener, with substitute players filling the vacancy for the next home game.

The victory ended Miami’s six-game losing run. The Bills would go on to defeat the Dolphins 27-0 at home, giving Buffalo its first sweep of Miami since 1966.

In Marino’s first career start, the Bills won in Miami for the first game since 1966.

Marino’s 322 yards and three touchdowns were a foreshadowing of his 17-year Pro Football Hall of Fame career.

The Bills’ first kickoff was lost at their 17-yard line, but Marino was intercepted on the next play.

Miami receivers Mark Duper and Mark Clayton helped the Dolphins keep pace with the Bills after Buffalo built a 14-7 halftime lead. Clayton’s option pass to Duper for a 48-yard touchdown tied the game at 21 heading into the fourth quarter, and Clayton’s 14-yard touchdown catch from Marino gave the Dolphins their first lead of the game, 35-28.

However, in the final seconds, the Bills knotted the game on a fourth-and-goal touchdown throw from Joe Ferguson to Joe Cribbs, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Miami had two chances to win, but Uwe von Schamann missed field goals from 52 and 42 yards. Joe Danelo’s 36-yard field goal was successful, earning the Bills their first victory in the Orange Bowl in 16 trips.

Ferguson’s 38 completions set a single-season record for Buffalo.
