Plateau Humanitarian Vanguard (PHV), a social-cultural group in Nigeria’s North Central zone, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, for quickly responding to the recent attacks in Plateau State.

According to the Vanguard, such humanitarian interventions in the face of hunger and displeasure caused by the attacks, while not compensating for the lost lives, “can give the people a sense of belonging and alleviate the momentous pains occasioned by the unfortunate attacks.”

On Christmas Eve, marauding gunmen slaughtered 200 persons in Plateau State’s Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi local government areas.

At least two people were also killed in a retaliatory attack by gunmen late Saturday night in Durbi village of Shere district, Jos East local government area, just one week after the initial incident.

Dr. Edu had stated in a condolence message to the people of Plateau following the incident that the government will mobilise urgent assistance to impacted communities.

On the 28th of December, 2023, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, also quoted the President as directing the “Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and other relevant agencies to work with the Plateau State Government to deliver immediate humanitarian relief to the affected communities.”

As a result, Dr. Edu arranged for the provision of food and non-food relief goods to victims of the Plateau State attacks yesterday.

The Minister, who also toured impacted areas with her counterpart from the Ministry of Defence and Service Chiefs, was on the ground to coordinate Humanitarian Responses as instructed by President Tinubu.

Comrade Jonah Pam, President of Plateau Humanitarian Vanguard, said in a statement on Wednesday that the federal government’s rapid response through the Humanitarian Affairs Minister has given the people hope in the Asiwaju administration.
