“This has been a very complex case,” said Jason Ferguson, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. It’s been distressing to witness some young promising players violate WPBSA behavior laws due to pressure from two experienced players. The imposition of two lifelong bans from participating in any form of recognized snooker has recognized this behavior as completely wrong.

“Those who try to corrupt sport are constantly looking for new ways to avoid our monitoring processes, and this outcome should serve as a lesson to those who believe they can avoid detection.” If any player is detected rigging a snooker match, they will face serious consequences.

“I am pleased that the commission concluded that there was no evidence of a broader culture of wrongdoing in snooker” from the current case. Good day, dear reader! When former Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha delivered his New Year’s greeting in 1967, he pulled the “truth bomb” cord. “This year will be harder than last year,” he said. “It will, however, be easier than next year.” On the one hand, thank you for not sugarcoating it, Enver. On the other hand, you monster killed the party vibe!

I don’t want to kill the atmosphere (or any dissidents) by reminding you of the news year that has just passed – or by warning you of the news year that is about to begin. It’s not huge, not creative, and definitely not seasonal. But I will state unequivocally that our reporting feels especially important in these trying times. If you are able, please help fund the Guardian on a monthly basis starting at $2 to ensure that it remains open for everyone. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. A free press is as important now as it has always been, and on some days, even more so.

In exchange for your assistance, I formally* grant you the right to refer to yourself as “a newspaper baron” in conversation, at the pub, and on any business cards you may like to print. Face it: if you pay to support a news organization, you are, in essence, a newspaper baron. Simply enjoy it! Everyone else does.

With that, all that remains is for me to wish you a very good holiday season and a prosperous new year. You’ve certainly earned it.
