NEWS NOW;Over the weekend, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was questioned about permitting explosive play.

The Green Bay Packers’ defense has received plenty of well-deserved criticism. With Matt LaFleur stating that there will be no changes to the coaching staff in the near future, it appears that the Green Bay Packers will struggle through the rest of their season as they have done thus far. What does the most recent statement from the facilities mean for a defense that desperately needs to improve its performance on the field?

Green Bay Packers Loss Statement
Following the 34-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the defense held a Monday morning meeting to discuss the Green Bay Packers’ performance. According to Eric Stokes, based on a source from Ryan Wood, Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry stated the following:

While this is, of course, correct, it speaks to an even bigger problem for the Green Bay Packers in the future. What has to change now that the players and coach appear to believe the strategy is OK and there is no sign of it changing?

Green Bay Packers Preventative Strategy
It is easy to see how the Green Bay Packers intend to play defense. They want to avoid massive plays over the top, accept shorter completions below, and get to the quarterback with four yards on most downs.

The Green Bay Packers

While this is right, it points to an even bigger issue for the Green Bay Packers in the future. What has to change now that the players and coach appear to think the strategy is fine and show no signs of changing?

Green Bay Packers Preventative Measures
It is clear how the Green Bay Packers aim to defend. They aim to avoid big plays across the middle, accept shorter completions underneath, and get to the quarterback with four yards on most downs.

The Packers of Green Bay

If the defense is going to keep playing like this, the way they execute the game plan must drastically change!

If the Green Bay Packers are going to continue to play off coverage, with deep safety help, the coaching and mental approach needs to change. The offensive players in front of them need to face a line of confrontation once the ball is in the air, or as the run is developing from the Green Bay Packers defenders. Too often, the defense just looks satisfied with giving up the plays underneath.

There’s a feeling of their job being accomplished, as long as they can live another set of downs. Instead, the staff needs to shift the focus, if they are going to maintain this approach. Keep playing with a bigger cushion, but make it difficult once the ball is in play. This mental switch would keep it safe tactically, but give the players an added edge of looking to attack more as a defender.
