the former coach of Indiana University, was admitted to the hospital on Friday night, a statement sent to program graduates stated.

A brief update was sent to former players, informing them that the hall-of-fame coach had been admitted due to an urgent illness. On behalf of the family, Knight’s son Pat sent a statement on Monday afternoon stating that the former IU coach has been discharged from the hospital and is now at home.

“On behalf of the Knight Family, we thank you for your thoughts and prayers. As many have heard, my dad was hospitalized over the weekend with an illness and has since been released from the hospital.  We ask for your privacy as he is cared for and resting at home in good hands. Coach always taught us, and those that played for him, the importance of fighting through adversity and he and our family thank you for the tremendous amount of support you have shown and given during this time. We appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers.”

Dick VitaleDee tweeted Monday night he spoke with Knight’s wife, who said Knight was home recovering from pneumonia.

Indiana’s coach for 29 years, Knight won three national championships leading the Hoosiers. He was Division I men’s basketball’s all-time wins leader at the time of his retirement.

Knight has made his home in Bloomington for the past several years. In 2020, he broke a long-held promise not to return to the program from which he was dismissed in 2000, when he attended an IU-Purdue game. Knight has been a regular behind the scenes at team practices since Mike Woodson — who played for Knight from 1976-80 — was hired as head coach in March 2021.
