Latest News: New York QB Earns NFL Offensive Player of the Week Honors.

The NFL named New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito and New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson NFL Offensive Players of the Week for the NFC and AFC, respectively, on Wednesday.

(Just as we predicted in August for Week 14 of the season!)

DeVito was recognized for his efficiency during the Giants’ 24-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. He completed 17 of 21 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. With 49 seconds remaining, one of his ten second-half completions — a 32-yard pass to Wan’Dale Robinson — helped set up Randy Bullock’s game-winning field goal as time expired.

With 49 seconds remaining, one of his ten second-half completions — a 32-yard pass to Wan’Dale Robinson — helped set up Randy Bullock’s game-winning field goal as time expired.

Since taking over as the team’s starter, DeVito has grown into the role and helped the Giants to three straight wins, making him the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to do so since Phil Simms won four in a row in 1979.

The 25-year-old DeVito has also become a beloved figure in the New York sports scene due his backstory of being undrafted, still living at home with his parents and having an agent with a unique sense of fashion.

Moving on to the other NFL team that plays at MetLife Stadium, Zach Wilson has had a rollercoaster year. He began the season as a backup after the Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers. After Rodgers tore his Achilles in the first game of the season, he was thrust into the starting lineup.

Wilson was the starter until late November, when Tim Boyle got two starts. Those did not go well, and it was back to Wilson for the game against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The Jets’ 30-6 victory over the Texans, according to head coach Robert Saleh, was “probably the best game of [Wilson’s] career.” Wilson completed 27 of 36 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. The victory was short-lived.

“He balled, he balled,” Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson said. “He put it all out there, throwing dots in the rain and when those things mess with what they were trying to do on offense. As far as what we were trying to do, Zach handled it and that is always our goal, handle it better than them, and we did.

“Zach went crazy today, like I said, he has got all the faith in us in the world. It is great to see him and just hoop.”

On Monday, Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston reported that Patriots owner Robert Kraft decided after a Week 10 loss to the Colts to move on from coach Bill Belichick. On Wednesday, Belichick met with reporters.

To no surprise whatsoever, Belichick didn’t answer any questions about his future. In so doing, he coined a new catch phrase.

“Getting ready for Kansas City,” Belichick said at least three times when the issue came up.

That’s really all he can say. There are four games left. Commenting on his future won’t help the Patriots win those games. And if they do win those games, it’s not impossible for any tentative decision to be undone.

Winning, they say, is the ultimate deodorant. The vibe around the team changed dramatically after the Patriots upended the Steelers last week. If the Patriots can put the latest nail in the Chiefs’ coffin for 2023 on Sunday, the mood will brighten even more.

At some point, enough good things could happen to get the fans, and in turn Kraft, to consider seriously the potential consequences of moving on from Belichick. Regardless, after Week 18 it will be time for both Kraft and Belichick to get ready for a decision that could change dramatically the future of the franchise and Belichick’s remaining years in coaching.
