Green Bay Packers: Super Bowl Champion Coach Becomes Defensive Coordinator Option Following Thanksgiving Victory

After an impressive Thanksgiving victory over the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers are riding as high as they have all season. The Packers demonstrated that they were ready to play from the first drive of the game and never looked back.

The Packers jumped out to a 23-6 halftime lead and extended their lead to 29-14 late in the fourth quarter. The final score was 29-22 after a garbage time touchdown, but the game wasn’t even that close. The Packers’ defense has been hit and miss this season, but there is another option if they want to move on from Joe Barry.

Following a recent report, the Green Bay Packers may pursue Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio.

According to Pro Football Talk on NBC:

The Commanders’ defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio, reached rock bottom after a humiliating loss to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

According to multiple reports, Del Rio was fired today. Brent Vieselmeyer, the defensive backs coach, was also reportedly fired.

Del Rio is in his fourth year as Washington’s defensive coordinator, and he has faced criticism in the past, but head coach Ron Rivera has always stood by him. Rivera, whose own job is in jeopardy, has decided to call it quits. Rivera, a former defensive coordinator, will most likely handle defensive play calling for the rest of the season.

Del Rio, 60, previously served as head coach of the Raiders for three seasons and the Jaguars for nine. He’s also worked as a defensive coordinator in Carolina and Denver.

Would Jack Del Rio be of interest to the Packers?

Joe Barry has been scrutinized for years, and this season has been no exception. This season, on the other hand, is a mixed bag. On the one hand, the Packers’ run defense has struggled at times. They are currently ranked 21st in that category overall. They are also 24th in the league in terms of yards allowed per carry (4.4).

On the other hand, the Packers haven’t given up more than 24 points in a game since September 28th. In terms of points allowed per game (20.4), they are in the top ten. It would be surprising if the Packers parted ways with Barry in the middle of the season; however, Del Rio could be a viable option this offseason if the Packers decide to part ways with Joe Barry.
