NOTTINGHAM, England – Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be out for “months,” according to manager Steve Cooper, due to a groin injury that forced him to withdraw from Nigeria’s squad during the international break.

NOTTINGHAM, England – Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be out for “months,” according to manager Steve Cooper, due to a groin injury that forced him to withdraw from Nigeria’s squad during the international break.Awoniyi, Forest’s first-choice striker who has four goals in 11 appearances this season, has been dealing with the problem since October.

He played in Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Lesotho in World Cup qualifying last week, but then dropped out and has since had surgery.

“He is going to be out for months,” Cooper said of Awoniyi ahead of Forest’s Premier League match against Brighton on Saturday. “We’ll support him and do everything we can to get him back as soon and as fit as possible, but it’s a really unfortunate situation and a setback for him.” With the goals he’s scored and the goals he’ll score for us, he’s become an important player for us.”
