Women’s basketball drops in the AP poll, plus other Virginia Tech news
The latest Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25 poll was revealed in this Virginia Tech news article, along with some movement for the Hokies and other updates.
The AP Poll ranks Virginia Tech women’s basketball lower.
According to the women’s basketball preseason poll, Virginia Tech started the season ranked eighth. After defeating High Point a week ago to start the season, they faced No. 3 Iowa in Charlotte last Thursday night in a challenging early-season test.
Iowa defeated the Hokies 80-76 in the first game of the season with to 44 points from guard Caitlin Clark of the Hawkeyes, who proved to be too difficult. Despite losing to No. 9, Virginia Tech only lost one spot in the most recent AP poll, which was issued on Monday.
The Hokies made it into the Top 10 in ESPN’s inaugural women’s basketball Power Rankings for the 2023–24 campaign. Virginia Tech was rated tenth, and North Carolina State was one position ahead of them. On Sunday, North Carolina State beat the highly regarded University of Connecticut, which was ranked number two. Florida State was the ACC team that was ranked No. 15.
The squad led by Kenny Brooks will play Houston Christian at home on Thursday night at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match.
The North Carolina State volleyball team defeats Virginia Tech.
The Hokeis volleyball team played just one game this past weekend, at home against North Carolina State. Virginia Tech lost in four sets after winning the opening set, 25-16, then losing the next three, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-15.
The Hokies’ top scorer was Leandra Mangual-Duran with 13 kills, followed by teammate Hailey Pearce with 10. Iliana Rodriguez had 13 digs on defense against the Wolfpack.
With the loss, Virginia Tech’s ACC record fell to 2-13 as their problems in league play continued. They now have an overall record of 12-14 and will be back on the floor this Sunday when they host Wake Forest.

Unsurprisingly, two players from Virginia Tech were included in the women’s basketball watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, which was released on Tuesday.
Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore were the two Hokies named on the list and both are very deserving to be on the list. They are the two best players at Virginia Tech and two of the better players in the country at their position.
These are simply the athletes’ most recent preseason accolades. Preseason ACC Player of the Year, Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Watch List, Preseason AP All-American, Wade Trophy Watch List, Naismith Women’s Player of the Year Watchlist, and now the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List are among Kitley’s preseason accolades.

Through the first two games of the season, Kitley and Amoore are each averaging over 20 points a game in beating High Point and losing to Caitlin Clark and Iowa.
