On Thursday, the Champion of Champions event proceeded, with the highly competitive Judd Trump making a comeback to contend for the championship he captured in 2021. The Englishman advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Baipat Siripaporn, the reigning women’s world champion, 4-0 in Bolton. There, he will take on the victor of Shaun Murphy and Gary Wilson’s afternoon encounter.
Judd Trump defeated Baipat Siripaporn 4-0 on Thursday in Bolton, securing his spot in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Champion of Champions.
After losing to Ronnie O’Sullivan in the competition final the year before, Trump was eliminated by Stephen Maguire from the International Championship in Tianjin last week.
Despite that, it has been an excellent few months for the Englishman, who admitted after seeing off Baipat that he felt like he was close to his very best.
“I feel close,” declared Trump. I always feel like I’m going to score big when I enter and that I can score when I push. There seems to be more left in the tank right now. There were moments when I found it enjoyable. I wasn’t, though, at certain points. Winning is such a pleasant sensation both on and off the table.”
Baipat had won the Women’s World Championship back in February, which allowed her to qualify for the competition.
And the Thai player got off to the better start of the two, blasting a long red to the lower-left corner of the court.
Despite this, Trump also left some balls on the table, and she was unable to capitalize on her early in the frame.
After exchanging visits, Trump quickly settled into a rhythm and took advantage of an error to win the first game.
After barely 20 minutes of play, Trump had already taken a 2-0 lead, and Baipat was once more unable to capitalize on a mistake.
Trump has been dominating this season so far, winning the English, Wuhan, and Northern Ireland Opens.
He was eager to score his 44th century for the University of Bolton stadium crowd, having already amassed 43 centuries this term. He picked off multiple balls before launching a ton of runs.
He left a blue spot just short of the right middle, though, as he was unable to quite reach it. Baipat’s concession of the frame to give Trump a 3-0 lead would mean it would be insignificant.
But in the end, Trump would record his 44th century of the year and cruise to a 4-0 victory that sent him into the quarterfinals.
Shaun Murphy, who defeated Gary Wilson 4-1 in the late-afternoon encounter, will be his opponent next.
After an even start, the two players split a frame apiece. Wilson then used a 58 break to win what out up being his only frame.
After a close third game, the sixth-seeded Murphy easily defeated his fellow Englishman with a century break of 107 to move one frame closer to victory.
Wilson failed to pot a single ball to put a stop to his resistance with a whine, but he cleaned that up too with no fuss.
Trump and Murphy will compete in the last eight on Thursday starting at 19:00 UK time

He claims that everyone is frantic to get through and he is ecstatic. He started playing sans contact lenses by the end of the third frame, which marked a turning point. His prescription is low, so he had to squint a few times, but he was okay. He feels that every year the level rises, but it’s not coming to him as easily as it did at the end of the previous season. Nevertheless, he believes that “persistence is key” and that you must ride the highs and lows. Regarding Judd, he states that the opponent this evening could be in the best shape of his life and that the other players like watching him—though hopefully not too much this evening.
