NEWS NOW: “I lose roughly twenty percent of my game,” says Luca Brecel, who wants snooker to do away with the “awful” bow ties.

World snooker champion Luca Brecel believes bow ties should be banned because they cause him to lose “roughly 20 percent” of his game.

This year at the Crucible, the Belgian Bullet won the world title in spectacular fashion while donning the customary waistcoat and bow tie that snooker fans have grown to love.

However, the 28-year-old feels that he cannot play at his best when wearing the constricting apparel, and he believes that many other players feel the same way.

When asked what modifications he would make to snooker if he were in charge of making them, he quickly focused on apparel, telling Metro.co.uk that “dress code is definitely one of them.”

“It’s just the worst bow tie ever.” When I play with a bow tie, I lose about twenty percent of my game, and I believe other players have also mentioned this behind closed doors.

Maybe relax the dress code a little bit. In certain pictures, the shirt, pants, and other items make you feel constrictive.

Luca “Belgian Bullet” Brecel is the new world snooker ...

“I know it’s a competitive sport, and it probably looks good on TV, but we need to find a solution.”

Brecel will be in more relaxed attire this week at the Champion of Champions, where he takes on Barry Hawkins in his opening game on Tuesday afternoon.

The Matchroom-run event has opted for t-shirts over the traditional shirt and waistcoat, with the players’ names and nicknames emblazoned on the back.

Brecel is not stopping at attire when it comes to innovative ideas, though, and would like to see a shot clock brought into more events.

The Shoot Out is the only tournament currently using a shot clock on the main tour, but the world champ would like to see it brought in more widely to speed the game up.

‘Other than the dress code, maybe a shot clock, that would be good I think,’ he said. ‘I would have it in any of the tournaments, maybe. Just try to make it more attractive, quicker.

‘I always try to look at it from a viewer’s perspective because it is an entertainment business so it’s got to be quicker and more entertaining.’
