The IBSF World Snooker Championship final will feature Al-Obaidli.
Ali al-Obaidli of Qatar made history yesterday by making it to the IBSF World Men’s Snooker Championship 2023 final in Doha. Al-Obaidli and Hong Kong’s Cheung Ka Wai will square off in the title match today at 12:30 p.m. at the La Maison Hotel. By the same score of 5-1, the two winners emerged victorious from their respective semifinals.
In the final four matches, al-Obaidli, encouraged by the home crowd, displayed steely nerves and defeated Deng Haohui of China 62-61, 62-49, 63-17, 34-78, 57-48, and 71-11 in the best of nine frames.
Ali overcame Haohui’s early 61-point lead in the game with a calculated move to win the frame by one point. Following that, the local cueist played with consistency and won two straight frames to secure a 3-0 lead.
Nonetheless, in the fourth frame, which he won 78-34, Haohui had an opportunity to demonstrate some scoring shots. Al-Obaidli, however, regained his composure and won the next two frames to earn his first-ever spot in the World Snooker Championship final.
In an amazing match on the table next to him, Cheung Ka Wai defeated Michael Georgiou of Cyprus by scoring breaks in every frame he won.
Cheung defeated Michael with a counterbreak of 76 points in the second frame after winning the first one with a break of 60 points. Following that, Cheung completely overpowered the opposition, breaking 94, 61, 58, and 52 in the following four frames to win the semifinal with ease.
Earlier in the day, Haohui pulled off a significant upset by defeating Amir Sarkhosh of Iran, one of the top contenders for the title, 5-2, while al-Obaidli easily advanced to the semi-finals with a 5-2 victory over Ireland’s Ross Bulman.
Al-Obaidli took command of the quarters right away, winning the first two sets with a sizable margin to take a 2-0 lead (59-24, 57-22). Even though Bulman won the next two frames to tie the match, al-Obaidli came back strong to win the following frame 71-29.
Al-Obaidli dominated the sixth frame, winning 65 points to 4 by a wide margin as he kept Bulman at bay. In the final frame, Bulman gave it his all again, but al-Obaidli held onto his lead and won 54–44 to guarantee Qatar a medal.
Haohui, meanwhile, submitted Sarkhosh with a brilliant performance. Sarkhosh got off to a strong start, but Haohui prevailed in the first frame.
Following that, Haohui put on a strong showing in the second frame and broke the tournament record with a break of 141, beating Chang Yu Kiu of Hong Kong’s previous best of 140 two days earlier. Despite Sarkhosh’s comeback victory in the third frame, Haohui responded with a break of 72 to take a 3-1 advantage.
Sarkhosh’s 79-point break to close the gap, but Deng was unwilling to give up any ground. He tightened his belt even more in the following two frames, winning 56-42 and 53-35 to guarantee his spot in the semifinals.
