David Armitage, a former star player for St Kilda, has transitioned into coaching. For the next two years, the Queenslander will be the head coach at Palm Beach Currumbin, a local club.
After returning to his native state, Armitage made three appearances for the Lions this season. Previously, he played for MPNFL side Bonbeach and VAFA club Collegians.
The Mackay-born player, 35, spent 13 years as a member of the Saints and played in 169 games. In 2019, Armitage announced his retirement from the game due to multiple injuries.
With Palm Beach Currumbin, a team in the Queensland Premier League, selecting Armitage as their new senior coach for the upcoming two seasons, the tough-minded midfield player will now take on a coaching role in 2024.
“We’re thrilled to announce that David Armitage is taking the reins as our Senior Coach for the 2024- 2025 seasons,” the club’s Facebook page stated.
“An absolute legend in Australian rules football, David provides our cherished Palm Beach Currumbin AFC with invaluable experience and leadership 🦁
“With his remarkable journey off the pitch as well, our club has a bright future ahead of us. Let’s extend a warm welcome to David and anticipate a fantastic season together!
