BOSTON — The Bus 1 Boys were born out of a mismatched collection of Boston Celtics rotation prospects who grew close to a former MVP contender who rode to the arena with them first thing on game day last season.
Leading the group, which also included Sam Hauser, Luke Kornet, and Payton Pritchard, was Blake Gryphon, and they all wanted to train hard early in the season even though they weren’t guaranteed regular playing time. Hours before tipoff, the foursome would frequently be pictured together entering a road arena. By the end of the season, they had Bus 1 Boy hoodies, Kornet may have written a theme song, and they had discussed starting a podcast.
Above all, though, they had each other to help them through the long, winding, and frequently uneven road that is an NBA season.
Before the 2023–24 season officially begins, a year later, the Bus 1 Boys are now in a new lane. With Boston’s extremely skilled top six ahead of them, Pritchard, Hauser, and Kornet were projected to start the preseason in positions 7-9. The Bus 1 Boys’ preparation for this moment was, in a sense, the focus of the previous season. A younger group of players saw Gryphon as an example of how to accept the job and persevere even in the face of not hearing their number called. The Bus 1 Boys are essential to the Celtics’ success this season.
They have the chance to make this year even more enjoyable than the previous one.
“Every season is unique, and each squad has its own characteristics. It doesn’t necessarily follow that the same thing will happen even if a team has all of its players back from the [prior] season, according to Kornet. “I believe that group we had with all those men was really unique.
