The West Ham star Jarrod Bowen is probably going to be benched against Italy since England’s Phil Foden is expected to start on the right side of the attack.
The Manchester City attacker is anticipated to start for the Three Lions on the right side of the attack in the Euro qualifier, according to Sky Sports News (17 October).
Although Bowen began the international friendly match between England and Australia in this position, The Daily Express (13 October) reported that he “struggled to impact the game from the right-wing,” which may have influenced Southgate’s choice.
Ollie Watkins’ goal in the second half gave England a 1-0 victory over the Socceroos, but they did not play well. Given the importance of the next Euro qualifier against Italy, Southgate fielded a reserve team for the friendly.
According to SofaScore, Bowen was okay in his fifth appearance for England, completing his passes with an accuracy rate of 86% (19/22), winning three aerial duels, and making one interception and tackle. He didn’t exactly light up the world, either, with only 39 touches and three attempted shots in 90 minutes.According to league performance, Bowen should be chosen without a doubt. Foden has played 6.2 full 90s of football this season, whereas the Hammers star has played 8.0 full 90s, according to FBRef. Foden tops the list for assists with three, but Bowen leads the English scorers in the Premier League with five goals.
Foden has been an ongoing threat for England since making his debut in 2020, and Southgate obviously has his regular starters. The 23-year-old has far more international experience than Bowen, having played in both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2020.
Southgate won’t be able to avoid Bowen should he maintain his outstanding form, but for the time being, all he can do is keep excelling at the club level and make the most of every international opportunity.
