Although it seems like just yesterday that Nottingham Forest’s eventful summer deadline day ended, the January transfer window is quickly drawing near.

When the window reopens, the Reds probably won’t have much work to do. In the summer, they added 13 new players, the majority of whom had already begun to make an impression in the Premier League.

But given the club’s desire to advance this season, January might still be significant. We consider what might be on Forest’s transfer agenda, but there is still a ways to go and a lot can happen.

Increasing the firepower
The Reds increased their offensive threat in the summer by signing AC Milan attacker Divock Origi on a temporary loan. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga were also included.

The loss of Taiwo Awoniyi for a month due to injury, though, is a major setback. And that implies that Forest might want to take another look at up front in January.

They have had trouble scoring recently, despite some beautiful build-up play that did not result in goals. Since their 3-2 loss against Manchester United in August, Steve Cooper’s team has not scored more than once in a game, although they have scored three goals in their last five league games.

The Reds definitely need to improve on that. However, some of it can be attributed to the fact that the team is still coming together and the players are still catching up. There is no doubt that Forest have the ability to give someone a good thrashing when they are fully in sync.

Awoniyi might not actually miss many games due to the international break. Even said, the Reds would want to evaluate their level of coverage in January given that the Nigerian was also injured for a significant portion of the previous season.

Origi and Chris Wood are two different kinds of strikers. It remains to be seen if they can step in to replace the vacuum left by their teammate’s absence, and the result may affect the club’s intentions for the upcoming winter transfer window.

Overseeing outgoings was as much a priority as making key signings for Forest in the summer. They needed to trim numbers.

The club did a good job of doing just that, with several fringe players heading elsewhere either on loan or on a permanent basis.  moves were found for the majority of those who didn’t make the cut.Ethan Horvath was one of the exceptions. It was expected Luton Town would take up an option to sign him on a permanent basis after his successful loan spell last season, but the Hatters changed their minds. And although the Reds were willing to let the American go, having brought in Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos, an alternative move did not materialise.“I guess the ideal situation for him would be to be playing football somewhere, whether it’s us or somewhere else, like he did last year,” Cooper has said.            “Unfortunately, that is not the case at the moment.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              .

With 13 new additions made during the summer transfer window, the Reds currently have a strong depth of players. However, it can be challenging for players to force their way in because Cooper is eager to build a very stable club.

That is what Brandon Aguilera is showing to be the case. Cooper was impressed by the 20-year-old throughout preseason, but his only first-team action so far this season came as a substitute in the Carabao Cup loss to Burnley.

“The international break will be really good for him, because he has got something to look forward to. He played in the last one and has been called up again for this one, so he’s involved in that. It is something that we will have to address in January.”        Horvath is out of contract next summer, so January is Forest’s final chance to try to get a bit of money for him.                                                                                      He is one of several players in that situation – a group which includes the likes of Scott McKenna, Willy Boly, Serge Aurier, Felipe and Wood – meaning decisions will need to be made at some point over whether to offer fresh terms.

Aguilera’s condition will be reevaluated in January, according to Forest’s head coach. And by then, it’s possible that another loan is thought to be the greatest option for his development.

“We are enjoying developing a program for this young kid. Cooper stated in August, “But that will stay with us for the medium term until January, and then we will examine it again.

George Shelvey, a young goalkeeper, might also profit from a stint elsewhere. In the summer, he expressed his desire to play frequently and his willingness to accept a loan.
