Leeds United man doubles down on decision to leave Elland Road to work for manager with “that aura”
Rasmus Kristensen, the right-back for Leeds United, has revealed why he chose to join Diego Llorente at AS Roma in the summer.
Away from the Championship, a number of Leeds players were able to secure summer transfers to top-tier clubs around Europe.
Many of them cannot call their exits a success at the moment, as they fight to regain the form that drew Victor Orta to Elland Road in the first place.

Rasmus Kristensen chose to leave for personal reasons.
Rasmus Kristensen hasn’t had the finest time at Roma, where he’s been on loan since joining centre-back Diego Llorente. He did, however, speak to TV2 Sport on his decision to leave West Yorkshire for the Italian city and the opportunity to work with one of the best managers in history:
“He’s an excellent coach.” That is one of the reasons I chose to visit Rome. He’s one of the best coaches in history, having accomplished all there is to achieve. And he exudes the same atmosphere.
“He’s a top-tier coach in my opinion.” So, of course, I wanted to collaborate with him. So far, it’s been a lot of fun and learning.”
What about his omission from the Europa League?
Perhaps encapsulating his difficult start with Roma was the fact that Kristensen was considered as the fall guy from their roster as they named their Europa League squad for this season, hampered by budgetary constraints.
He has been unable to play in Europe for his new team this season, which means he can only play domestically at the time, and he explained why:
Of course, I was exhausted (I was not chosen for the UEL squad), but I understood the laws of financial fair play. I wasn’t surprised that they went with a right back. It would have been more contentious to exclude (Romelu) Lukaku.
“He expressed his regret and acknowledged that he understood how furious and dissatisfied I was. But that was the only option. I’m powerless to change anything.
“Fortunately, I have participated in Serie A matches that have occurred.” In that sense, it’s been fine, but it’s still frustrating.”
Would you like to see any of the loan players return?
Kristensen may be learning the hard way after leaving Leeds that, as much as he’s been given the opportunity to work with Mourinho, the grass isn’t always greener.
He’s left Leeds for a team that has viewed him as expendable and perhaps surplus to requirements from the start.
Our odds of cashing in and making good money on a handful of our signings in the summer of 2024 do not look promising.
